Hello,
I know there have been plenty of messages on this topic, but my problem is slightly different.
Indeed, I have tested nearly all the solutions and I encountered several issues trying to fix my hard drive.
Yesterday my external hard drive was dead, so I waited to test it on another machine.
This morning I tested it on my computer and the hard drive is recognized with 85GB of free space out of 500GB. The problem is that when I open the folders, there’s nothing inside!
I immediately ran a CHKDSK /F and the result is:
- The file system type is RAW.
- CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.
So besides being trolled by my PC that won’t read my external hard drive, I’m on a quest for information....
The first thing to do is to check the settings of the external hard drive and there... I check and BAM it shows as NTFS.... And that’s where the difference lies with other threads. My hard drive doesn’t want to cooperate; it shows as RAW in CHKDSK and as NTFS in its settings.
I’m running a test with testdisk but apart from Read errors during the search and Read Error at [each analyzed part], I’m afraid it won’t be conclusive...
Currently, the analysis is ongoing. That said, should I throw my hard drive out the window? [I had already resigned myself to losing all my files yesterday before being trolled...]
Thank you for your help!
Have a nice day!

Hello
For RAW disks, read this excellent tutorial to repair (or try to) http://poloastucien.free.fr/raw_tuto_h.html
Don't necessarily throw it away, you need to delete it, then create a partition, format it as NTFS, and then run a check to see if there are any errors.-
Hello,
Thank you for your quick response. I did the analysis but unfortunately my PC shut down before I could see the result. When I ran CHKDSK again, it found it as NTFS but it still doesn't work. So I'm waiting for the end of the CHKDSK to move on to step 2.
Your link isn't very recent but it seems very comprehensive.
Thanks again! -
