    Hello benja03,

Normally Mac OS X does not support the ext3 file system, which is primarily used by Linux.

The possible alternative that comes to mind would be to boot your MAC using a Linux Live CD to then set the format you are looking for.

By the way, if you come by here could you share a bit more details about the purpose of this operation? Is it an external HDD or an internal HDD?

I will keep an eye on this topic :)
    A+

    Hello there!
    Thank you for your response,
    It's an external hard drive.
I don't know much about the purpose of the operation, I'm interning in post-production and I've been asked to find out how to format an external hard drive from FAT32 to ext3 from a Mac!
    Thank you! :)

    Hi benja03,

The reformatting in question would not be possible directly via the Disk Utility on MAC. However, there are alternative methods that could do the job.

Apart from what I suggested in my previous message, there are alternative applications (MAC OS compatible) that could do what’s necessary. It's worth searching for them using keywords that will help narrow down the search and provide good directions. You should also take into account the respective version of MAC OS due to the application compatibility.

If a NAS (Network-attached storage) were involved in the story, you could connect the HDD to the NAS and format it to ext3.

I hope this information will be useful to you :).
    See you!
