Em dash and invisible underscore in display

Hello,
For a few days now, the em dash ( -- ) and the underscore ( _ ) have not been displaying in my Word files (Word 2002, on Vista), and the same issue occurs when I open the document in Open Office. There is no display issue with the "normal" dash ( - ).
I have enabled automatic correction so that two dashes ( -- ) automatically produce an em dash as I type. This automatic correction is still active, but as soon as I type the second dash, a space appears instead of the em dash. A copy-paste of this space with an "invisible" em dash into a search engine allowed me to verify that the em dash does exist; it is just invisible in the word processor.
When I open the file in Open Office, or save it in Open Office, the problem is the same (rtf format is identical).
When I open the file on another computer (Word 2010), the characters display without any problems.
I ran a scan with my antivirus and searched for spyware, but the problem persists.
Does anyone know where this type of issue might be coming from? An independent display problem unrelated to word processing?

Can you revert to an earlier restore point?
Otherwise, reinstall Office.

A few days ago, Microsoft released a security update for Windows, including Vista.
Could you try the fix
"Fix for text quality degradation after installing security update 3013455 (MS15-010)"

It has been successfully installed by other users who also had font display issues in Word.
