External hard drive recognized but not showing in Explorer

Hello,

I am using Windows 8.1 and I have a Western Digital My Passport 1TB external drive.
Recently, when I connect it to my HP laptop, it gets recognized but does not show up in the file explorer.

I went to the device manager and I can see that there is an issue with "Generic volume" and "WD SES Device USB Device."

When I double-click on it, it says: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There are no compatible drivers for this device.
To find a driver for this device, click on Update Driver.

I tried updating, but nothing works. The problem is indeed with the computer and not the hard drive because I connected it at a friend's place and had no issues.

Hello Nicoco,

Regarding error code 28, have you tried following the instructions here: https://support2.microsoft.com/fr-fr/help/310123/error-codes-in-device-manager-in-windows#28?

A good idea would be to check the Device Manager: right-click on Computer > Manage > Device Manager > expand Disk drives > right-click on the disk > click on disable/uninstall > unplug the external HDD > plug the external HDD back in.

When checking the Device Manager, do you see “WD Ses Device” marked with a yellow question mark? If so, feel free to update the drivers: Device Manager > right-click on WD Ses Device (marked with the yellow ?) > Update driver > choose "browse my computer for driver software" > click on the virtual CD drive of the disk > in the "extra" folder, you will find "WD device driver" > click to select it > Next.

You might want to take a look here https://support-en.wd.com/ :) The details here https://support-fr.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18748 will interest you :)

This link will provide you with good information about the virtual CD http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/FRA/4779-705098.pdf. The document is about the complete installation guide for the My Passport® Ultra(TM) but depending on the specific model of your WD My Passport, you can download the respective Guide from this page http://www.wdc.com/fr/products/external/portable/.

I will await your feedback :)

Hello Sannin,

Thank you very much for your response.

I did exactly what you told me, but I'm stuck at step 8: http://wdc-fr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/search/1/a_id/5912

The installation is not progressing and I'm being told that the installer is not responding...

Hello Nicoco,

Have you tried all the troubleshooting steps suggested by Sannin_WD? They are very good leads.
Have you attempted to uninstall and reinstall the drive, as suggested by Sannin?
On the Microsoft website that Sannin provided you, there are two automatic troubleshooting tools that you can also try.
Regarding the installation of the SES driver, are you sure you downloaded the correct file for your operating system: 32/64 bits? If so, try launching the driver installation again.

Hello,

Yes, I have completed all the manipulations suggested by Sannin, and yes, I have downloaded the 64-bit version but the installer won't proceed.

Does the issue persist with another hard drive or USB stick?

Have you tried installing the SES driver in Safe Mode? Check here to see how to access it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US

Another possibility is to see if it is possible to restore the system to a previous point before this issue occurred. Here is an article that may help: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-refresh-reset-or-restore-your-pc-51391d9a-eb0a-84a7-69e4-c2c1fbceb8dd
