Hello, brand new on this forum, I would like to ask you a question.
I just bought a MacBook Air 11" (my first Mac, I've always been on Windows and I admit I'm a bit lost at the moment) for university and I'm looking for a word processing software. I've looked around at everyone's advice and finally settled on OpenOffice which I downloaded. I'll explain everything I've done to hopefully make it easier for you to help.
I start the download and a shortcut to download OpenOffice is on my desktop
First problem: can't install it because it comes from a website and not from Apple. After searching online, I right-click while holding Ctrl and open it, and it works and installs.
After that, I have a shortcut for OpenOffice on my desktop, I launch it and an OpenOffice icon appears in my bottom bar that gives me access through a new window to word processing, spreadsheet, drawing... From there everything works and I can take notes and save them.
But as soon as I turn off the Mac, upon restarting, everything is gone except for the shortcut on the desktop to download OpenOffice and my document backups. I have to reinstall OpenOffice every time. Hence my question: How can I have OpenOffice all the time?
ps: my files are saved in .odt format, does this pose a problem for Windows users?
Thank you, see you soon.

Hello,
You probably launched OpenOffice from its installation disk image instead of dragging the application to your Applications folder. A small installation error with OpenOffice, therefore.
When the .dmg disk image is "mounted", drag the OpenOffice application into your Applications folder to install it on your Mac.
Then, "eject" the disk image and throw the .dmg file in the trash.
And it is from the Applications folder that you will need to launch OpenOffice.
