Hello,
I'm reaching out because this morning when I woke up, I had a strange surprise on my computer, a blue screen with the message:

"Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information

File: \BCD
Error code: 0xc0000034

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

I don't know the reason for this message, but last night before going to bed, I had a Windows update that I completed successfully, but it didn't do much for the state of my computer this morning... So I searched online for solutions everywhere, but nothing worked. I then wanted to reinstall Windows using the installation CD "Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 products 64-bit

To do this, I pressed Esc, then went into boot and selected CD/DVD in 1st boot, then F10 to save in order to access my installation CD.
When I reached the Windows 8 installation CD home page after a good minute, I selected "My language: French", then the language to install, the time format, and the keyboard, then repaired the computer, and several choices were offered to me:

- Refresh your PC which tells me: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again" (Unable to find a solution)

- Reset your PC which tells me: "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing." (Again, no solution found)

Then advanced options:

- System Restore: "To use System Restore, you must specify the Windows installation to restore. Restart the computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore." (Once again, no solution)

- Automatic Repair: "Automatic repair could not repair your PC

I then tried to reinstall Windows 8 by clicking on "Install now" instead of "Repair your computer" and again a problem:

"Load a driver

Your computer needs a media driver that is missing. This could be a DVD drive, USB drive, or hard drive driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive containing the driver, insert it now."

So there, I really need help, I've been stuck on this problem since this morning and can't find a solution, especially since I can no longer use my computer.

Thank you in advance.

Configuration: iPad / Safari 1.0

Hello,

I had the same issue with my Asus laptop bought in June 2015 and since no forum helped me to solve my problem, I went to my computer dealer.

On Windows 8, and on an Asus, it’s simply enough, to get into diagnostic mode, to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (this corrects the "boot" error) and immediately afterwards to repeatedly tap F9.

And just like that, it’s done, you exit the BIOS mode and return to diagnostic mode, with settings, recovery, and all that stuff just like under Windows 7.

After 20 years using computers for my work, it was the first time I couldn't figure out a software problem by myself. I couldn’t get out of that blue screen! It was simply a matter of knowing the combination mentioned earlier, which my dealer could have told me over the phone!!!

Possible reasons for the "Boot" problem that occurred on my new Asus laptop:

Just before this problem occurred, I had downloaded Flash player. My computer dealer told me that it was unnecessary because it was already on my computer, and that you should only download such software from the manufacturer's website, in other words for Adobe Flash Player on the Adobe website and nowhere else. He advised me to download Malware Bytes, whose trial version is valid for a certain period but can be reinstalled after complete uninstallation of the software in order to eliminate all the junk that gets installed without your knowledge when you download: when buying a computer, you indeed start by downloading a bunch of software like Adobe, PDF, or others; however, these programs are well-known for being packed with hidden software (especially adware).

Then, he pointed out that I had downloaded Avira while the free one-month license of Mac Afee on my new computer was still valid. That this was slowing down the computer significantly due to potential conflicts. He thus deactivated Avira, telling me I could reinstall it once the free license of Mac Afee expired.

Finally, he confirmed that with Windows 8, it is impossible to create a backup disk from your computer. Stores have a Windows 8 reinstallation disk without a license, to assist their customers, but obviously they are not allowed to make a copy of this disk for customers. So, if you want a Windows 8 reinstallation disk, you have to buy one: Microsoft has done everything, under the pretext of making our lives easier and providing improvements, security, and blah blah blah, to turn us into paying pigs as soon as we buy a new computer: no reinstallation disk, no free antivirus, no office pack, etc., etc., as was the case in the past when buying a new computer. They want lifetime subscriptions, and that’s why all these services are in the form of subscriptions!!!

In short, even if you reinstall Windows 8 from a disk you buy (I understand this can be quite expensive), you will, at the end of the Windows 8 reinstallation process, have your computer as if it just came from the factory or the box; meaning you will have to reinstall all your software and all the configurations you made! Is it really worth it???

In my opinion, it’s not worth it. So I’m trying to make a backup with a 32 GB Flash USB drive (don’t try it with 16 GB, it’s too limiting), through "Control Panel - File History - Recovery". But it has been running for 4 hours now.

To be continued!

Lastly, a little tip from a self-taught computer user. A burnt cat fears cold water, I made a copy, with Snipping tool (which is on all computers. Write the name of the program in Search, then pin it to the taskbar with a right click), a photograph, which I copied into a Word document, of all the original files in the MsConfig menus and Task Manager: that’s where all the original programs are listed. This way, when a hostile program creeps into your startup or service programs, you can know if it’s original or if it’s something installed without your knowledge during a download. If that's the case, delete it without fear. Be careful! Don’t delete anything labeled Asus or whatever according to your device brand, as it is likely part of the functional programs of your computer.

Hello,

Why bring up this old topic that is completely dead today? A few comments on your remark, however:

1. On Asus, F9 remains active and opens the advanced menu. No need for ctrl alt del. But it is often buggy, especially the factory reset option. If you haven't used backtracker (Asus tool) to make your backup, you're often stuck.

2. The download of Flash player happens anyway during updates, nearly once a month. In short, this is not a valid "reason" for blocking it and does not justify the idea of "not installing it."

3. I agree with the technician when he points out conflicts between antivirus programs. The same goes for the need to disinfect. Three-quarters of PCs are at least partially infected.

4. That he has "masters" brand by brand is obvious. However, he is wrong when he says that we cannot reinstall W8 from a backup disk or a downloaded iso. We do it all the time, with links found here and there. If Secure Boot is activated and the version is the same, we have no problem. The drivers are on the manufacturers' websites. And if we made our recovery key with backtracker, it works very well.

5. To make system backups, we have a plethora of tools (aomei being the most effective). Microsoft even included the "recimg" command in W8 that creates effective and reliable images.

6. The crashes of W8 during startup have multiple causes. What is happening here has nothing to do with what is happening there: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-30567564-you-need-to-repair-your-pc-boot-bcd-heeeelp#p32218895
