How to install a FireWire on a laptop

Question

Hello;
I want to install a FireWire on my laptop to transfer videos from our camcorder.
But I don’t understand how to do it on a laptop... I’ve seen plug and play cards, but I don’t think I have that port either...
We have a Toshiba and Windows XP

Hello, can we safely install a ExpressCard/34 in an ExpressCard/54 slot? I want to install a FireWire port on a Toshiba laptop and it seems that only ExpressCard/34 formats are available. Thank you.

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 8920 laptop, but I unfortunately noticed that it doesn't have a FireWire port, and I'm having trouble with my DV camera. I have an expresscard/54 port but can't find any cards in that format for IEEE 1394, I can only find /34 formats. Hence my question similar to nanot32's. By the way, if anyone knows where to find these cards, I would be glad to know. Thanks in advance.
I'm running Vista, and apparently some /34 cards are not supported by this OS.

You plug in your device, then install the driver from the disk that comes with your device, and that's it. Otherwise, you can look for the latest driver updates for your device online ;)

Hey,  What card did you get?  The most common ones don’t specify that they’re compatible, are they still compatible?  Or did you get a card where it was clearly specified that it was compatible?

For my part, my computer was equipped with an xpress54 slot. I bought a xpresscard 34 with 2 firewire ports and everything is OK! It fits in like an SD card in a card reader or a digital camera: you push, hear a click, and it stays connected. To remove it: you push, hear a click, and it pops out.
So no need for anything else.
I admit I was very surprised (but happy) about the compatibility of the xpresscard 34 in the xpresscard 54 slot.
I hope my experience will be useful to you.
