IEEE 1394 Connection and USB Port

Hello,

On my old computer, I was digitizing my videos (Canon Mini DV) using a ieee1394 cable. My new computer doesn't have a ieee1394 port, only USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. Is there a cable to connect the ieee1394 port of the Canon Mini DV to the USB 2.0 or 3.0 port of the computer? What specific model is needed? Where can I find it? If such a cable exists, will it allow for the same quality digitization?

So the right solution is to install an internal IEEE 1394 FireWire card for about twenty euros

and also a mixed card with a USB port if you don't have a free port on the motherboard, you can replace the USB card:

these are examples, make sure the card is compatible with your Windows OS.

I'm exactly in the same situation,
on the new PC (Windows 7) I don't have a FireWire 1394 port anymore.
I'm connecting the Panasonic DV camera via USB.
With Windows Live Movie Maker and Nero Vision, my camera is recognized and I can retrieve the films from the DV tape to my PC.
However, with Pinnacle Studio 15, nothing works; Pinnacle does not recognize the USB connection with a DV tape camera.
Which software do you use for capturing?
To Pinnacle users and DV camera owners: can you capture using USB?

Hello Roddy, what you’re telling me surprises me because all my sources say that the USB should not be used as the bandwidth is insufficient
and the result will be at best mediocre, and the fact that you have a DV camcorder to USB cable also confuses me because only the photo files from the camcorder can be transferred

Indeed, online I read "on a DV (or HDV) camcorder, this USB connection is only used to offer the Webcam function, transfer photos or possibly mini-films of really degraded quality. Therefore, on a DV (or HDV) camcorder, you should NOT import video through this USB port: to do so, use the DV port"
I am therefore considering acquiring a PCI combo USB Firewire 1394 card. I hope it will be easily recognized by the system.

you buy a ieee1394 card compatible with your motherboard regarding the slots, that's all
