Hello,
I got a surprise update to Firefox this morning. However, I lost part of my personal taskbar because some icons no longer appear when I open the internet.
I therefore reinstalled Firefox but my Bookmarks icon is no longer linked to my bookmarks. A large bulky window now appears on the side instead of the usual small drop-down menu. My bookmarks are still there but my icon is no longer useful—how can I get it working again?
Thank you!
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 23.0

In the meantime, while we look for a solution, if there is one, I found this extension that lets you have the button you want permanently:
==> https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/personal-menu/
I installed it and it gives this:
If that works for you in the meantime ;) (click on the image)
P.S.: the extension is also customizable ;)

I almost fixed the issue:
When you customize your toolbar in Firefox, there are two icons for bookmarks. One with a small arrow in the bottom-right corner (which then opens the dropdown menu with the bookmarks) and the other one which, when clicked, brings up a large bar on the side of the screen.
However, the Bookmarks icon doesn't stay once I’ve placed it on my personal toolbar—does anyone know why? -
I'm sorry but that doesn't help me much actually; they aren't talking about the disappearance of the icon but about the links that mark a page.
I've looked at other topics where you only had to right-click and select Menu Bar/Navigation/Personal, these three options are checked for me.
I've tried unchecking them and checking them again, but it doesn't change anything. -
reset Firefox:
In the address bar, type the following line and press Enter:
about:support
Click the Reset Firefox button
Click Reset Firefox to confirm the choice
Note: During the reset, bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, cookies and web form autofill information will be preserved. However, extensions and themes will be removed, open windows and tabs as well as tab groups will not be preserved and the preferences will be reset.

I just did it. However my Bookmarks button still disappears...
What’s strange is that when I uncheck Menu bar, my icon reappears... How is that possible??? -
In a side panel you don’t like it?
which bookmark icon do you put in your personal bar?

Here I found an image that better illustrates my point, this dropdown menu and this icon:

And I can’t click on it because it disappears.
When I go to Customize, the icons come back:

Otherwise, the last icon disappears:

You need to put this icon in your personal bar:

That directly puts all the links and folders into my personal bar, I still don’t have access to the icon and its dropdown menu.
-
you won't get it because even at my place it disappears after you close the Customize window, if you want to manage your bookmarks, you can also do it via the menu bar:
Bookmarks – Show all Bookmarks.
They change a lot with each Firefox update.

It's still strange, the icon is still offered but it is inaccessible. Why offer an option that you can't use afterwards???
-
Who knows, but even at my place it does that, I might be wrong...

Before Firefox it was simple, we placed our buttons and that was it. It’s becoming increasingly unnecessarily complicated...

Thank you for all your responses; the case remains open and the question unresolved.

You're welcome, I'm staying on topic because I'm interested too if there's a solution, because I find it strange.

Yes, it looks very good, I’ll download it to see.

This extension works very well, in fact in my case it fills the functionality that Firefox no longer provides.
The button has reappeared and works perfectly:

Same for the dropdown menu:

Thanks again. -
It’s a pleasure ;)
