Problem with Atheros card

Good evening,

An Acer (desktop) quite old. A Freebox. The computer is connected to this Freebox via Wi-Fi and I have a exclamation mark on the Atheros Wireless Network Adapter card (there is no number). The Wi-Fi connection no longer works.

Is it a driver problem? or something else.
The computer runs Windows XP.
I searched for drivers but what I found does not fit.
I uninstall this card then reinstall and after a while the following message appears: "the installation could not succeed a problem occurred."

I look forward to your solutions and thank you in advance.

    Hello,

    Go to Start
    Run
    Type: devmgmt.msc and OK.

See if there are any question marks and which ones ?
    If yes, right-click the device
    Properties
    Details tab
    Give the hardware identification number.

To find the identification number, look here ->> here <<-

What is the Acer model number ?

    Hello,
Here is the card number: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0018&SUBSYS_EE241113&REV_01\4&DC268A3&0&4880
For the PC it's an ACER Aspire T160-M97Z with AMD64 Athlon
    Windows XP.

I've made some progress: I found the card driver, version 7.7.0.233.
I installed it on the desktop then ran the setup.
The installation went through but I still have the exclamation mark on the device and when I uninstall and then reinstall the device Windows recognizes it, shows the card name but quickly displays a message "the installation could not complete".
Thanks in advance for your advice but I’m really struggling.

    Download and install --> 7Zip

    Download this --> driver
and place it in your documents.

    Right-click on the driver
    Choose --> 7Zip
    Choose --> extract to 3483_xp......

    Go to Device Manager.
Right-click on the device in question
    Update driver
    No, not this time, next
Install from a list or specific location, next
Include this location in the search
    Browse
    Go to your documents
Select the unzipped driver folder --> 3483_xp......
    Next, etc...
    Restart.

    Hi,
The computer I’m on is “emmm.....” and it can’t connect to the Internet because I have a problem with the network card (code 10 + question mark).
So from the other computer I downloaded the two files onto a USB drive, but when I install the zip it needs an Internet connection and nothing can happen...
    I’m desperate.....
In fact I unzipped the driver file. I copied it to the computer in my documents. I opened Device Manager, updated the drivers by pointing to the unzipped file and that worked, but I still have the question mark and the code 10 !!!?????
When I click the Internet connection shortcut, it shows me a message talking about the COM1 port ????

From another PC, download 7Zip and the driver
Put them on a USB drive
Copy them to the problematic PC’s Documents
    Install 7Zip
    Then manually install the driver.

I did: see my previous message that I edited and added information.
Thank you for helping me. One question: could the card be ruined ????
I'm stepping away for 30 minutes: I’m going to water my vegetable garden: with him few problems
    See you soon

    Update the driver
    etc...
Did you correctly select the unzipped driver folder --> 3483_xp......
    Next, etc..,
    and restart?

Yes I did everything but nothing happens. I will try again, you never know... And I will correctly note the different messages.
      So:
      I uninstalled the card,
I updated the drivers: everything went well because Windows worked fine and the assistant as well
I rebooted and the same problem persists: exclamation mark and code 10.

I went to the internet connection icon (which has a red cross) I checked the properties and there is a message: "Modem removed, device not available COM1"
I clicked on configure and it asks for the maximum speed ???? which one should I choose ???
In the "Network Management" tab the Internet Protocol and Packet Scheduler checkboxes are checked.
I am tenacious!!! and tomorrow it's Sunday: I would be willing to spend part of the day with your help of course.
Looking forward to reading you and following your advice...

    Return to Device Manager
    Right-click the Atheros card
    Uninstall it

    Restart the PC
    Try installing it manually again:
    Go to Device Manager
    Right-click the device in question
    Update driver
    Browse my computer for drivers
Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
    Do not search
    Diskette
    Browse
Go to the folder of the extracted driver
    Select the file --> netathw.inf
    Restart.

    Hi,
I've done everything you advised. Still the same problem.
When I restart Windows it recognizes the card.
    I update the drivers
    choose not to search, etc...
Hardware list: 2 lines Atheros version 7.7.0.233 and the other version 7.7.0.523
I have followed the procedure with each (between each procedure I uninstalled and restarted).
I reach the file "netathw" but it does not have the .inf extension.
I don’t know what to do anymore: I start again, re-do the same things and still the same message.
Thank you for your help and your patience !!

    Go to the Control Panel
    Folder Options
    View tab
Uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types
    Apply and OK.

Try again by selecting the file --> netathw.inf

    Hello,
    It's done for the extensions.
I redid everything: uninstall the peripheral
    restart the computer
Windows detected the card as new hardware
I install the driver by using provided disk, browse, set to netathw.inf
As a result, at the end of the installation a message appears: "This driver is not for this platform"
And still the exclamation mark and error code 10..........................

Where does this Windows version come from?
    A modified or unofficial version?

this is an official version I would say because it is a Acer computer bought with Windows XP already on it. The updates were done correctly. It went back to ACER because there was a problem with the motherboard but that was several years ago and since then it has run well.

In fact there was a wifi internet connection on this computer that didn't work (the person did a hard drive clean-up) so I looked, I wanted to create another network to access the internet, it worked then I deleted this connection and since then I have the issue on this card.

I forgot to mention that this computer has been repaired and the box tampered with it... I have a 2010 recovery CD made by the company that repairs my computers (and I completely trust them).
    Thanks again for your help.

    Go to Start
    Run
    Type -> cmd and OK
Type -> sfc /scannow and enter

A System File Check will begin.

    Is SP3 installed correctly?

Manip done and here is the result:
      Windows XP version 5.1.2600
Check protected system files (FSP) and replace incorrect files with correct Microsoft versions
      /Scannov: checks all FSP immediately
/Scanonce: checks all FSP once at the next startup
/Scanboot: checks all FSP at every startup
/Revert: reset the scan settings to default parameters
/Purgecache: clears the file cache and checks FSP immediately
/Cachesize: sets the file cache size.

There you go, so tell me if SP3 is properly installed—I’m unable to answer that.
      Thanks again for your patience.

Have you run the command --> sfc /scannow
so that the verification takes place?

I wasn't fooled. I had entered "scannov" instead of scannow. I just redid it and a Windows window asks me to insert the Windows XP Service Pack 3 CD. I don't have any of that, of course. Do you have another idea? Thanks in advance.

Yes: it is sfc /scannow and not sfc/scannow.

You need the Windows CD to repair and/or restore defective files.

    Hello,
I only have a Restoration CD dating from 28/09/2010 made by the IT company.
On this DC I have 5 folders: home, isolinux, live, syslinux, and util. In the util folder I have a subfolder Win32
I also have 2 files: clonezille-live-version and copying.

I have never had a Windows CD for this computer.

    There you go
    Thanks again for your help

For manual driver installation, you must go to the folder of the driver you downloaded and unzipped, and not choose one or the other in the hardware list:

    Return to Device Manager
    Right-click on the Atheros card
    Uninstall it

    Restart the PC
    Go to Device Manager
Right-click on the device in question
    Update driver
Install from a list or from a specified location
    Don't search
    Provided disk
    Browse
    Go to your documents
Go to the folder of the unzipped driver
    Select the file --> netathw.inf
    Restart.

    Hello,
Actually when I’m on System Properties it shows Windows and it says Service Pack 3.

I just redid (before your message) the procedure you advised and the problem is identical….
    Thanks again
