Windows cannot find Solved

Question

Small problem, nothing serious but annoying!

When I click on a link in a document, a window pops up with a white cross, (accompanied by an unhappy sound from the computer!!)

"Windows cannot find: " http:// etc... " Please check that you have entered the name correctly and try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, then click Search "

But it still displays the requested page!!

What should I do to remove this unnecessary and intrusive message?

Hello I had the same issue, just go to -start -control panel -add or remove programs -set your default programs -then check "Microsoft Windows"  and everything goes back to normal. Best regards

Hi,

Either you're dealing with a host.exe virus, or you have a registry error.

In the first case, use the Windows search tool to find host.exe, then have it scanned.

For the second case, install CCleaner, a great error-checking tool, like yours.

I have exactly this problem and I've noticed that it comes from Firefox
If we set IE as the default browser it doesn't happen.

And your solution is good but it comes back to using IE and I don't want that!

I have exactly the same problem. IsabelParis's solution is probably effective, but like popl, I don't want to go back to IE. Does anyone have a solution while keeping Mozilla?

Well, I think I've found it!

The issue seems to come from the integrated Google bar that's causing chaos... In the meantime, until a patch is released to fix it, just switch back to Firefox 1.5 and everything’s fine!

Here is the solution to the problem:

On Windows Vista, go to
Start, then
All Programs and
Default Programs.
Then select
Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
All you have to do is associate the desktop shortcuts to the websites with Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

After several tests, I realized that the solution I proposed yesterday, September 23, did not work very well, as the websites do not display correctly.

Here is a solution that I have just tested several times and that works perfectly well:

1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut.
2. Click on Properties.
3. In the Target line, copy this command: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" (with quotes) BEFORE the address of the website you want to visit. Be sure to leave a space between this command and the address.

Example:
To go to the Shoutcast.com site, here is the command line that should appear:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" https://www.shoutcast.com/

All the tests I have conducted so far have been positive.

Hello everyone

I have exactly the same problem. I don’t understand what’s happening especially since it doesn’t happen with all sites and, in the end, just after the message, the searched site appears!!!
I tried Miguel’s solution which seems to work on Vista, but for me on XP, no solution!
Has anyone found one?
As for me, I will try to contact the Firefox people, we’ll see.

Hello again,actually, it's quite simple...As for me, after my previous message, I thought I should try reinstalling Firefox.So I re-downloaded version 2.0 to make sure it was clean, and I reinstalled it.For now, I no longer get that type of message, and Windows connects just fine.Give this a try...Good luck.

I just had the problem too, and I resolved it this morning.
My setup: XP Home, and Mozilla as default, IE as backup (1% of sites ...).
The problem is the same whether IE or Mozilla is set as default.
I solved it simply by updating the extensions in Mozilla, in my case Ad-Block.
Don't ask me why, or how, but this update seems to affect the "Internet shortcut" file type ?? !!
In my opinion, there's no need to reinstall, which can sometimes be worse, introducing duplicates in file types, and Windows doesn't like that!

The problem comes from the Google toolbar integrated by default into Firefox. Just disable it (or even uninstall it completely).  Tools menu --> Add-ons --> Extensions Select "Google Toolbar for Firefox" and click on "Disable".  And there you go!

Stop looking for a solution, it’s simple.  For Windows XP users  Start > Configure default programs > Custom (click the dropdown arrow) > check “choose a default web browser: Mozilla Firefox” > OK  The problem disappears miraculously!

The solution is even simpler. I tried all the solutions in this topic, but to no avail.
Knowing that I didn't have the Google Toolbar, that I didn't have Adblock, that I had a fresh Firefox, and that I tried to disable everything.

Anyway, I was pulling my hair out while the simplest solution was to create a new profile.
That is to say, completely close Firefox, run the command Firefox.exe -p, and then create a new profile.
I can't say that my problem will be solved tomorrow (we'll see), but in any case, the fact that I no longer see those dialog boxes that I constantly had to close every time is a relief.

So anyway, create a new profile!
