Re
It can happen that a memory card is faulty. Several like that, it’s highly improbable.
This Canon is indeed designed for "standard" SD or SDHC cards (not specific to Canon, as might have been feared).
I assume you charged the battery correctly before use...
This looks (in my humble opinion, but I willingly accept disagreement):
- either a problem of bad contact between the SD and the Canon: I assume you inserted the card the right way, AND all the way until you hear the "click" (manual page 31).
- or a write-protected card (although the message should logically be different!): I assume the write-protect switch is fully pushed in the direction opposite to "Lock" and that you checked!
- or probably a card format issue not recognized (this is not about size, but about the organization of sectors on the card: several are possible).
If I understood correctly, you have only tried cards that have been used elsewhere, and their "preparation" might not be suitable for your Canon?
Have you tried a new card?
==>> With a new card (if it doesn’t work) or one that has been used (in which case you’ll lose its content!!) try "LOW LEVEL formatting" (manual page 40), and if that works, then do a normal format afterward. Then try taking a photo in any mode.
If that fails, it is unlikely that you forgot to do something, and I think it’s a hardware issue...
Did you buy it at a local shop? Go there and demand they demonstrate it for you (you might have to pay for a new SD card).
Did you buy it by mail order? Do you trust this supplier? Try contacting their customer service. Don’t forget you have a 7-day withdrawal right, but it might be too late... Otherwise, there’s the warranty...
But I think you can contact customer service at any Canon shop, if you have your dated proof of purchase.
Don’t regret buying this camera, I think it’s excellent. You might just be unlucky. Let’s hope your supplier is reliable, and is not selling defective batches...
I hope I was overly pessimistic!
But I think you’ve done enough to be entitled to contact customer service right now, without fear of looking ridiculous...
Good luck!
