Iomega external hard drive issue

Hello.

External hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards, ... not recognized.
This problem is recurring.
I see it every day on CCM.
It seems that this malfunction occurs due to "improper disconnections".

And unfortunately, there is no "miracle" solution.

Bad habits
Some users, out of ignorance, do not properly disconnect their USB stick from the computer it is plugged into.
This presents two main risks.

The first is related to the sudden power cut on the USB port, which can affect the electronic components of the stick and damage them.

The second relates to the operating system of the computers, which is generally configured to save USB transfers.
It manages the writes to the stick in the computer's memory and only performs the actual transfer based on certain criteria: sufficient size, proper disconnection of the stick, task scheduling, use of DMA,...
In doing so, there exists a period of desynchronization between the "logical" writing to the stick and the actual physical writing (after USB transfer).

The consequence is that a stick that is suddenly yanked out will not be properly synchronized.
It is possible that files on the stick may be and remain locked, or exhibit content inconsistencies.

The incident often becomes apparent during the next connection of the stick, thus too late.

To prevent these inconveniences, simply use the proper disconnect commands for USB media.

An icon, in the taskbar of Windows XP or on the desktop of certain Linux distributions, makes this operation quick and ergonomic.
Linux command line enthusiasts will use commands like sync and umount.

Thank you for this response, but I am careful and do not yank the equipment, either I use the "eject" command or I shut down the computer...
