Hello,

I have a laptop and I would like to change the processor because mine only has one core and is only 2.3 GHz. It's starting to fail, in short.
The problem is that I can’t change laptops; mine is very good, it’s just the processor that is terrible...
So is it possible to change it, please? I’ve been told that it cannot be done because it is soldered to the motherboard... And regarding the required specifications, where should I look? Does it cost a lot?
Thank you in advance for your answers, have a nice evening!

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 26.0.1410.64

Hello,

since you haven't provided any information about the brand and model of your laptop, I can only give you general remarks about this operation

Generally, the processor (CPU) of a laptop cannot be changed for various reasons:
- it is sometimes soldered onto the motherboard, in which case replacement is impossible;
- unlike desktop PCs, laptop manufacturers never provide compatible processors, which makes replacement significantly more complicated. Therefore, you need to experiment or, better yet, research online to see if other owners of the same model have been able to change their CPU.

It's exactly my computer, there is information about the processor in the second paragraph!

Here is your PC on the manufacturer's site:
http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01763154&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=3944782&prodTypeId=321957

As you can see, HP does not provide any information on other compatible CPUs...
It's up to you to search the Internet to find information on changing the CPU on this laptop, for example by typing "change CPU on Compaq Presario CQ61-205sf"

Here is what I found that suggests an Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo with socket P and FSB 800 is compatible:
http://cgi.ebay.fr/Carte-Mere-578053-001-HP-Compaq-Presario-CQ61-205SF-/400437059047

Good luck.

Okay, thank you, but is the processor soldered to the motherboard?

apparently not, according to the ebay link:
Accepts a processor of type Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo in socket P, with FSB 800 (original processor not included: SLGLQ (Intel Mobile Celeron 2200 MHz)
the seller, who is a professional, wouldn't say that if the CPU were soldered...

For your information, I changed the processor of a Compaq Presario CQ61-407sf. It was not soldered to the motherboard. Instead of the Celeron 900, I put in an Intel T8100 from another laptop (which was otherwise broken). Well, it really makes a difference! Remember to apply thermal paste (like Arctic Silver) and follow the disassembly example, for instance, here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFbAJ3lYI2A
