Number "00" calling

Hello,
Today, my landline phone rang, the number displayed being just "00". I picked up... Obviously, no one on the other end.... Hung up... Oh no, couldn't hang up. And even more surprisingly, the other landline phones were ringing still. So I went to get the second one to hang up, which hung up the first. But the 3rd was still ringing, so I went to pick it up, which hung up the 2nd and with a bit of luck the 3rd at the same time!
Could someone explain this strange phenomenon to me, as well as this business of "00"!
