Hello,

I just bought a Samsung home cinema system (Samsung HT-ES6600) and a Philips TV (PHILIPS 47PDL6907H/12)
The salesperson at Darty confirmed that I needed an optical cable to get the sound from my TV to the home cinema.

I've only connected one HDMI cable between the two and I have sound from my TV on the home cinema!!

However, I wanted to know if this optical cable is really necessary???
Does it allow for Dolby sound from the movies playing on the TV?
Is my HDMI cable enough to fully enjoy the TV and the home cinema??

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello,

First of all, you should note that your television does not have an audio output (red and white) and the SCART connection does not support audio and video outputs.

To work with the television, the audio system must have a digital audio input (optical) or an HDMI source with ARC (Audio Return Channel) functionality. Ensure that both your home theater and your TV have an HDMI port.

You can connect your television to your audio system in two ways:

1-Digital audio output

Using an audio cable, connect the optical "DIGITAL AUDIO OUT" (optical) port of the television to the "AUDIO IN" (optical) port of the audio system.

To connect the "DIGITAL AUDIO OUT" (optical) of the television to an analog stereo system, you will need a digital-to-analog converter (DAC or D/A). Make sure the converter supports the conversion of LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) and AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio formats. If you want to ensure that a converter is suitable, contact your retailer.

2-HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel)

This feature allows streaming sound from the television via an HDMI source using the Audio Return Channel (ARC) function. You do not need to make a separate digital audio connection. Connect the HDMI port of the television with an HDMI-HDMI cable to the "HDMI ARC" port of the audio system, but the ARC function is available for only one device/connection at a time.

PS: An HDMI connection provides the best sound and picture quality. An HDMI cable combines video and audio signals. Use an HDMI cable for high definition (HD) TV signals. For optimal signal transfer, do not use an HDMI cable longer than 5 meters.

Good evening,
Very useful explanations. I would like to complement the information with an additional question.
Is it possible to use the HDMI ARC signal as you explained AND use the optical connection to connect a soundbar? Since it is impossible to take the HDMI ARC signal only once.

Thank you.
