Incorrect numbering of figure captions

Hello,

I have an issue with the numbering of my captions. I have a document with 4 levels of headings, and when I insert a figure, I want its caption to indicate the chapter / subsection number in which it is located.

So basically:

1. Main Title
Figure 1.1
Figure 1.1
1.1 Medium Title
Figure 1.1.1
Figure 1.1.2
1.1.1 Small Title
Figure 1.1.1.1
Figure 1.1.1.2

Etc.

The problem is that by checking "include chapter" in the numbering options when creating the caption, it works once for the chapter I’m in but it also changes all my other captions to number them at the level I just indicated.

Re-example, I have this:

1. Main Title
Figure 1.1
1.1 Medium Title
Figure 1.1.1
Figure 1.1.2

-> When I position myself in 1. and insert a figure, I get

1. Main Title
Figure 1.1
Figure 1.2
1.1 Medium Title
Figure 1.3
Figure 1.4

instead of what I want.

Does anyone know how to proceed?

I’ve already tried:
- entering the numbers manually but then I can no longer create references to my figure, which disappears from the list or the numbers are no longer included
- changing the field code to the appropriate heading level, it works for a while but as soon as I insert a new caption, the numbers of all the others are once again incorrect
- fiddling with all possible options in my "caption" style
- lighting candles in front of my screen and trying to exorcise the demon that inhabits my Word

Thank you in advance :)

EDIT: This is Word 2010

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 24.0.1312.57

    Hello,

After a quick read, I understood exactly the opposite of what you wanted to do... because it seems more logical to have the same caption numbering in the same document.

As a result, what you want to do is not a default option, even though it is within the realm of possibility.

First of all, a little lesson in things ;))):
    - A caption is in a SEQ (sequence) field.
    - If you choose to add the current paragraph number, there will be a second field, this time a STYLEREF field that indicates the current heading level (level you choose in the caption numbering dialog box).

The problem is that Word tries to make things easier for you by putting the same thing everywhere. And since this is not what you want, you'll have to change it manually.

Field codes are displayed by pressing Alt+F9 and they update by pressing F9.

So if you display the field codes, you will see something like:
    Figure { STYLEREF 1 } { SEQ Figure \* Arabic }

For the first field (STYLEREF), you will need to manually enter the heading level number.
And I think you shouldn't need to modify the second one.
