Unable to "close" Mozilla Firefox

Hello,

Configuration: Windows XP / Internet Explorer 8.0

For some time now, I have been unable to "close" Firefox 18.0.1
It appears to close when I quit, but it actually isn't because when I launch it again, a message appears indicating that Firefox is already running...
The task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) indeed shows in the "processes" tab that the software is still running!
Restarting Firefox therefore requires me to first terminate it from the "processes" list each time!
Any idea on how to fix this increasingly annoying issue?
Thank you in advance!

Thank you!
I close it with the 'white cross in a red square' icon in the top right corner of the screen, just as I have always done.

This is obviously the normal way, so there is a bug in your browser. The best thing to do might be to uninstall it, while keeping your files, bookmarks, and other things but not the cookies, as you would run into the same problem again, and to reload it fresh and reinstall it.

Hello
this is a small bug that happens to me once every 5 times, let's say, and I had to download the latest version and reinstall it, the problem was solved.

I'm really happy for you because it didn't work out for me...

Thank you Marie-Claude,
I had attempted this a few days ago by exporting the 'bookmarks' files (.JSON) before uninstalling Firefox. After 'cleaning' the registries and reinstalling Firefox, I imported the 'JSON' file.
Unfortunately, this didn't change anything...
On the other hand, if I delete my cookies, I will lose all the logins and passwords for the 50 or so sites I visit very regularly...

Click on the Windows Start button and select Run....

Type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and then click OK.

Windows File Explorer will then open a folder containing your profiles.

Double-click the folder with "Default User" in the name to open it.

Delete the parent.lock file.

Should I do this before or after the suggested reset?

It's done.
I restarted, tested Firefox, then closed it.
I relaunched Firefox, ...and it is still 'active', unfortunately.
Conclusion: same procedure as in my initial post, i.e. Ctrl+Alt+Del, etc...
Should I have reset it first?
Thanks!

Run an sfc to check for any corrupted system files.

Start
All Programs
Accessories
Right-click on --> command prompt
Run as administrator and confirm
Type: sfc /scannow and enter.

It wasn't a good idea...
Many DLL files have been replaced by their base version, including the graphics card management one which now only has the basic driver in .....4 bits!!!
I now have a BIG system problem!

I don't see why it wasn't a good idea; it's just that your PC is in poor condition.

Is your XP original?

What exactly did the sfc tell you?

My PC is healthy; it is checked every 3 months by the Technical Service of my provider.
My XP Pro is original from Original (Microsoft with license key).
The src constantly asked me to insert the Windows CD; otherwise, it would loop on this request with no way out. After inserting the original CD, it replaced the current DLLs with the outdated originals that hadn't benefited from Microsoft updates for years!!
