Click on the "+" at the top right to open a new tab
then right-click on the previous tab and choose "close tab"
Firefox stays open on the home page .. and you can minimize it to an icon in the taskbar.

But to do new searches, you don't have to close the previous ones.
You can easily open around fifteen tabs without any problem, and even open multiple Firefox sessions with several tabs open, and minimize the pages to icons in the taskbar .. I do it regularly ...
Hovering over the Firefox icon in the taskbar gives you a preview of the open pages and you can choose which one to reopen ..

In case of issues, you can set the number of simultaneous connections for Firefox (and a ton of other things) by opening the config page (type "about:config" in the address bar). I forgot the name of the corresponding parameter to modify, but you can search at the top of the config page, or Mr. Google should also be able to help you ..
