Différences entre Intel Core "i3, i5, i7" et Intel "Xeon" ?

Hello everyone,

I am becoming more and more interested in computers and I dream of someday having the knowledge to build my own tower. So, like any good beginner, I have a ton of questions. Right now, I have questions about processors (CPU, right?!)

At INTEL, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I understand the "ranking" of the power of their processors:

Celeron
Pentium
Core i3, i5, and finally i7, which from what I understood is the pinnacle of INTEL processors.

So, based on this, if it's correct, I was wondering where the XEON processor fits in?

Configuration: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz 4GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT

Hello

Xeon processors are designed for WORKSTATIONS and servers.

They are equivalent to i3, i5, and i7 depending on their specifications, but unlike them, we can make them work together on a "multi-processor" motherboard, which the "Core i" can't do.

A Xeon is neither more nor less powerful than another Intel processor with the same specifications.

Well, I understand, 2 processors on a motherboard, I can imagine the power... Xeon reserved for heavy calculations then, not for me ;)

As for me, my tower will be used for multimedia (not too demanding games, movies, internet...) I was thinking of going for a core i3, not yet decided on its power.

But is it better to have a strong core i3 or a weak core i5? Or am I completely mistaken lol?

For your ranking, taking the latest models from the processor families you mentioned, it is accurate (even though you forgot: the Core 2 between the i3 and the Pentium). Xeon processors are oriented towards professionals while the others are "consumer." Xeon started with the Pentium 4, allowing multiple identical processors on the same motherboard (which the Pentium 3 could do but not the 4). They are thus "out of the ranking." It's like the series of Pentiums, which is very extensive over time: from the first Pentium 66MHz to the Pentium Dual-Core at 2GHz, there's a gap!

<<<..the core 2 enters...>>>
it's a dead LGA775

The Pentium Dual-Core and the Celeron are also in LGA775....

Intel Celeron and Pentium processors = socket 1155
https://www.topachat.com/pages/detail2_cat_est_micro_puis_rubrique_est_wpr_puis_ref_est_in10062042.html

than the Intel Celeron G4xx which is single core

I didn't know there were any on socket 1155.
But I'm sure there are Pentiums on socket 775: proof (other than that I have one) is the list of compatible processors from one of my motherboards on socket 775:

I never said otherwise
with the P2, P3, P4 series
they have 4 different sockets to their credit (like the Celerons) at least
socket 370, socket 478, socket LGA775, socket LGA1155 (and I'm forgetting some)

in LGA775 socket, the Pentium dual cores were the Pentium Dxxx; Exxxx and Txxxx

Hi kev89

for multimedia, for your price range, it's better to go with an AMD FX

the first i5 is around €170
and for that price, you can get an FX 8150 with 8 cores

see you

Hello old crippled bison,

I'm just starting to grasp the differences between all the products from brands like INTEL and NVIDIA... Don't even mention AMD lol
Anyway, I mean I haven't studied AMD and everything it makes, processors, graphics cards...

Actually, I was planning to stick with INTEL and NVIDIA for building my tower because I understand the difference between their products, and I know what I want from them. As for AMD and its processors, I couldn't tell which one is better than the other.

When someone mentions INTEL I5, okay I get it and I can gauge its power compared to another INTEL. But when someone says AMD FX... uh, isn't that a singer? ^^

Otherwise, I really appreciate your help, I'm researching AMD directly (thanks Google) to see what you're talking about, but can we please stick to INTEL? ^^

"In my case, the use of my tower will be multimedia (light gaming, movies, internet...)

Either an i3 with a decent graphics card, or an AMD Trinity without a graphics card.

Nothing in your usage justifies the need for a powerful CPU.

"Finally, I mean I haven't studied AMD and everything they make, processors, graphics cards...

Oh really? How are FX4, FX6, FX8 and A6, A8, A10 harder to understand than i3, i5, and i7?

How are 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970 more complex than 660, 660 Ti, 670, 680?"

Hi Franck7511,

" Either i3 with a decent graphics card, or AMD Trinity without a graphics card. "

- Yes, that's what I was saying earlier, I'm leaning more towards a core i3. So obviously with a decent GPU. I was just wondering, is it better to have a higher-end core i3 or a lower-end core i5....

" Oh really? How are FX4, FX6, FX8 and A6, A8, A10 harder than i3, i5, and i7? How are 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970 harder than 660, 660 Ti, 670, 680? "

- But I never said it was "hard" to distinguish their products, I just said that basically I have never really paid attention to this brand and therefore I don't know at all what they make, and as they say "unknown object touches your ass"

And on the other hand, it is true that I don't necessarily make the effort to study other brands. All the PCs I have bought in stores until now were built with INTEL and NVIDIA, so I continue on that path. I tell myself that INTEL and AMD must surely balance each other out; if one was significantly stronger than the other, I imagine we would know about it right away.

a simple ranking of graphics cards
http://www.choixpc.com/recapcg2.gif

we know the rankings
tests for processors
https://www.clubic.com/processeur/processeur-intel/article-487908-8-ivy-bridge.html
https://www.clubic.com/processeur/processeur-intel/article-487908-10-ivy-bridge.html
https://www.hardware.fr/articles/863-22/moyennes.html

at high power, there's only Intel, but you pay a high price
at mid-range power, you have to ask the right questions
at the low end (office use) AMD in FM1 socket or FM2 socket

you also need to consider the screen size
between a 19" and a 24/25", it's a simple double in graphics card power
since we won't recommend an AMD FM1 or FM2 for a 27/30"

but sticking to Intel and NVIDIA for mid and low power is more expensive

For my initial question, which was to understand the difference between core i3, i5, i7, and Xeon, I think I have understood the answer well :) and thanks to everyone by the way.

I mark this topic as resolved because we have strayed quite a bit from the original subject. I will surely create another topic with plenty of other questions regarding my future configuration.
Notably on the right choice of processor and graphics card ;)

Thanks again to everyone for all your information and advice :)
Have a good evening.
