How to restart PC after motherboard replacement?

Question

Hello, My motherboard recently failed, so I had to replace it. As I was warned, Windows 7 does not start. The system repair tool doesn't work either. I would like to know how to get my PC working again without losing my data on the hard drive that is not backed up elsewhere, and if possible, without having to reinstall Windows since I'm not sure about the reliability of my backup DVDs.  The computer was an Acer Aspire M1641. The motherboard is now a Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo. The computer was running Vista upon purchase, but I was able to receive a free upgrade to Windows 7. I have the installation CD for the motherboard, the upgrade CDs, as well as the backup DVDs, but I'm not 100% sure I did the backup correctly.  Thank you.

You will have to reinstall the OS. One possible solution is to remove your hard drive and put it in an external enclosure that you can connect to another PC in order to recover your data onto an external storage device (such as a USB stick).  --  Respect is a virtue. Writing in correct and comprehensible French is a way of respecting those who read you and help you.

Ah...  And how should I go about reinstalling Windows? Because I've already tried using my backup DVDs but nothing happened...

Hello, As mentioned by the other contributors, retrieve your files either with a live CD (to boot the PC) and an external drive, or by installing your disk in a USB enclosure to recover the information on another PC. Your backup DVDs, if they are good, will reinstall the drivers for the old motherboard, which will clash with the new one. -- I don't know more than you, but I'm looking.

Also, which files should I back up? I've already copied the "users" folder. Will copying the "program files" folder keep all my old programs as they are?

Good evening, No, by documents to be saved, we generally mean the documents created or added by the user, text files (.txt, .doc ...), spreadsheet files (.xls), photos, videos, music, everything in "My Documents" and in the directories created by the users. Programs are often not recoverable because they also install dlls in system, system32 and make modifications in the registry. However, you can still try to reuse them; some are self-contained and only use standard Windows components. But it's "hit or miss." -- I don't know any more than you do, but I'm looking.

I was able to copy my personal files using Toutou Linux.  When I insert my two double-sided recovery DVDs (one "normal" and one Labelflash), nothing happens at startup. I tried reading them on another computer: one "normal" side contains files, while the other "normal" side is blank... and the burner drive on the other PC doesn't seem to support Labelflash.  I also tried the "altgr+f10" command, but it shows me the message 
oexecute=optin.
