Hello,
Configuration: Linux / Firefox 14.0.1
Hello,
I have a Lexmark S605 printer. It seems that the only way to access the configuration of this printer is to download the 'lexmark-printer-utility' package in 32-bit from the Lexmark website.
I opened a terminal and navigated to the directory where the .deb file is located.
Then I did the usual
By the way, if I type
There is probably a problem if we think that 'apt-get' is supposed to automatically search for the package on the Web and not on the machine.
But in this case, I saw online that I need to do:
Which I did.
But even then I receive the same response.
Same for autocompletion.
Does anyone have an idea?
Thank you in advance.

Then I did the usual
# apt-get install lexmark-printer-utility Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package lexmark-printer-utility
By the way, if I type
apt-get install l (followed by the Tab key, there is no autocompletion, it 'sees' nothing)
There is probably a problem if we think that 'apt-get' is supposed to automatically search for the package on the Web and not on the machine.
But in this case, I saw online that I need to do:
sudo apt-get install lexmark-printer-utility -o Dir::Cache::Archives="/absolute/path/to/package/directory"
Which I did.
But even then I receive the same response.
Same for autocompletion.
Does anyone have an idea?
Thank you in advance.

Try the following approach:
Put the package in downloads (but it may already be there), then right-click on that package and click on "Open With" and ask to "Open with the Ubuntu Software Center."

Hello BMMWW,
I did what you told me.
'The Ubuntu Logithèque' informed me that 'Lexmark-printer-utility' was already installed. How, I don't know.
I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it.
Installation process completed successfully.
If I open a file in gedit and request to print, there are no printers available.
If I go to /System Settings -> Print
launching the printer search process, a Lexmark (networked) printer is detected. A driver search is then initiated. But no driver is found.
By clicking on -> Next, all printer brands are offered. I go to Lexmark and find that the S605 (in fact none of the printers from the S605 series) is offered.
So it's a failure.
If I open a terminal and type
$ lexmark-printer-utility
the response (both as root and non-root) is 'command not found'.
No better.
Now if I do:
Dashboard -> Applications
I see an icon "Lexmark Printer Utility".
I click on it. A window for adding a printer is presented to me. I proceed and the process returns to the initial screen, but no printer has been added.
I'm stuck.
Do you have any suggestions for me?
Thanks in advance.

You go to "applications" and look for the software: "Package Manager." If it is not present, you install it by opening the Ubuntu Software Center and searching for: Synaptic, then installing the software "Synaptic Package Manager."
When your package manager is open, you search for: cups
You will get a list of packages. You request the installation of the package: cups (by right-clicking on it), then in the search, you type: lexmark and install all the packages from the list.

For the record, I'm on Ubuntu 12.04
I did what you told me and I'm coming back to it.
Before your reply, I did a few things.
In summary, I loaded the package lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb according to your method.
I had read somewhere that this package provides the printer's PPD.
After this operation, I can only print one page. No more printing after that. It's better than nothing, but not great. (whether in USB mode or WiFi mode)
To print another page, I have to turn off and reconnect the printer. Not convenient at all.
Then I did what you suggested.
cups: apparently cups was 'locked'. I reinstalled it.
After that, I couldn't find any package related to 'lexmark'?
For now, I'm not printing any better.
I have to go out now. When I return, I will try using Lexmark packages for older versions of Ubuntu (10.04 or 11.04). I'm a bit worried that everything will get mixed up.
What do you think?
Thanks again.

Well done!
There is a necessary package that is not installed... but which one???
Go back to the package manager and install cups.
In the list, go through them all and install any that seem appropriate to you. Do not install those with the names of other brands like Canon or Brother, and do not install those with the name KDE.

To follow your advice, I reinstalled or installed everything that could be related, directly or indirectly, to the packages dealing with cups.
I then reinstalled the printer.
I was able to print 2 files one after the other.
That’s twice as good, but not perfect.
I will continue to search (for example, installing an older version of the drivers or the Lexmark installer)
To avoid bothering everyone, since these manipulations can take time, I will mark this message as resolved.
Thank you for your help and suggestions.
