Big problems with Mail

Solved

Hello everyone,

Here is an application that I am very disappointed with on Mac.

Mail is behaving erratically with my inboxes, and I am noticing that some emails I sent never left!!

I keep getting the same error messages telling me to re-enter my password, and this happens 10 times in a row, or that it's impossible to connect to the servers, etc.

It's very rare for all my inboxes to work at the same time.

Having a MacBook Pro, I feel like being connected in one place or another affects the behavior of my inboxes. Can anyone help me configure Mail?

Thank you for your help,

Configuration: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) / Firefox 15.0.1

Hello everyone
As for me, it's resolved...
I had chosen security by using the two-step verification option with "GMAIL"!!!
Which actually caused a real mess in my "Apple Mail"!!!
I disabled the two-step verification and everything is back to normal...
What a relief...
Yosemite is actually not to blame at all.

Hello,

Mail is like all email software, including on PC. It's not Mail that is disappointing, but the way you have configured it that poses a problem.

To send a message, you must always use the correct outgoing SMTP server.

This server must always be that of the Internet Service Provider used at the time of sending. For example, if you are at home and subscribed to Orange, it will be smtp.orange.fr, while if you are at a friend's house who is subscribed to Free, it will be smtp.free.fr, etc.
This applies without exception to all POP-type email accounts.

For IMAP-type accounts, it can be different. In this case, very often, you need to use the sending server of the email provider rather than that of the ISP.
For example, for a Gmail IMAP account, it will be:
smtp.gmail.com:youremailaddress,
while for a Gmail POP account, it will remain the SMTP server of the ISP used at the time of sending.

For information:

Best regards

Thank you for your help, Sanspseudo!

Does that mean that when I want to read my emails, I need to know the ISP and set up Mail??? Yet I can send and receive my emails from anywhere with my iPhone?

Is it not possible to configure Mail to automatically detect and change the ISP's SMTP?

Thank you for your help,

You can configure Mail with several pre-configured SMTP servers, depending on the possibilities of encountering this or that SMTP server here or there, and if the Mac cannot send, it will suggest using another server. (which should have happened normally in past cases).

For the iPhone, it is a bit different, as it is capable of sending emails via your mobile provider's phone network.

At home, when the iPhone connects to your Wi-Fi network, it will preferentially use your home ISP's SMTP, but if that network is not available, it will use the phone network as it does to receive emails when you are outside.

There is a utility designed to automatically configure the Mac according to your movements:
Sidekick

Thank you, I will test Sidekick.

Could you give me the best settings for Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo.fr, with Orange as the ISP?

Thanks again,

I've already written so many messages on this point on this forum, so to avoid repeating myself once again, here are a few among hundreds of others. When I wrote these messages, the use of POP accounts was more frequent than that of IMAP accounts. Today that is changing.

Thank you, I'll get to this reading ; )

If I understand correctly, SMTP manages the sending server via the ISP. To receive my emails, I don't need to change it...?

Then we choose between pop and imap...?
Which of the two handles notifications across all devices?
For example: I mark my emails as read on Mail, and I want them to be marked as read on my iPhone as well.

For the constant requests for my mailbox passwords in Mail, what should I do? I saw that in each account there was "password authentication." Should I deselect it...?

Thank you : )

To ensure that emails marked as "read" on the iPhone are also considered read on the Mac, an IMAP account must be used. This works particularly well with a mail account on iCloud, which is free and available from Mac OS 10.7
https://www.apple.com/fr/icloud/

For incessant password requests, it is possible that Keychain Access has stored some incorrect passwords. The best solution is to delete the relevant entries in Keychain Access, and then when Mail requests a password, allow it to save in Keychain Access once you're sure you've entered the correct password. (Applications / Utilities / Keychain Access...)
In Mail preferences, for the affected account(s), it would also be advisable to re-enter the correct password.

Some IMAP accounts use a password on the sending server, such as Gmail for example. On the other hand, most POP accounts use an SMTP sending server without a password.

Thank you Sanspseudo, I managed to reconfigure my email accounts.

I truly regret that in 2012 Hotmail still operates on POP and that Mail does not have a built-in program that can detect POP accounts and modify their SMTP according to the ISP.

Thanks again Sanspseudo, and looking forward to it :)

Hello,

At my place, on Mac OS 10.8, but it was the same on 10.7, Mail automatically detects the account type and fills everything in automatically.
I don't remember how it was on Mac OS 10.6

Anyway, happy with the outcome :)

P.S.: Mac OS 10.6 dates back to 2009...

Yes, I know, but I just bought my Mac from a website, and it came with Snow Leopard...

You tell me "but that was already the case under 10.7"

How is that possible if the next (and last) version of Snow Leopard is Mountain Lion? Sorry, but I'm new to Mac and I don't yet master all the Apple logic...

Ps: Despite my Hotmail settings with the incoming server as pop3.live.com and port 995; and smtp.free.fr (using default ports) for the outgoing server, the "Sent Messages" folder is processing endlessly and is not sending the messages I tried to send... Do you know why?

A Mac delivered in 2012 with Mac OS 10.6 can only be a second-hand Mac or an old model that was on the shelf for at least a year or more.

Indeed,

Mac OS 10.6 known as "Snow Leopard": release date = August 28, 2009
Mac OS 10.7 known as "Lion": release date = July 20, 2011
Mac OS 10.8 known as "Mountain Lion": release date = July 25, 2012

Knowing that it is not possible to run a Mac on a version older than the originally delivered version of Mac OS, this model cannot be a Mac model after July 2011. There are of course sometimes models already on the shelf with a given version while a new version of Mac OS is released by Apple. In such cases, Apple always implements a system for acquiring the new version of Mac OS for free.

If you have the serial number of this Mac, you can find the exact model on Apple's website using this page:
https://support.apple.com/specs

To find this serial number, go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac," then by clicking under "Mac OS X," you should see it, or in "More Info..."

Let us know what you find...

Here is what he gives me: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP517?locale=en_US&viewlocale=fr_FR

This doesn't really seem to match what was promised to me at the time of purchase.

I bought it on Ventes du diable: A SITE I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST!!! This site is a source of problems, and will never deliver what you ordered in proper condition. I ordered 2 MacBook Pros for €1800, I received a first generation one with numerous scratches, dents, and on top of that, sticky keys; and the 2nd one with dents on the lid. Not having noticed the computer's performance at the time, I kept it. But today I deeply regret my choice. Because this computer seems very outdated.

What do you think of the description given by Sanspseudo?

the link provides the specifications for Mac OS 10.5, (an even older version of Mac OS than Snow Leopard), but this link doesn't mention the exact model of the Mac.

Go to the Apple menu / About This Mac... (and "More Info...", if necessary)

and copy here what is indicated as the version of Mac OS and the serial number of the Mac

I need to take a screenshot. The number does not appear in "About this Mac." Then I have Software, Hardware, and Network. In Hardware, I have "SATA Series." I assume that’s where I'll find this information. Is it risky if I share a screenshot on cijoint.fr?
0

The number should appear under the Hardware section. And normally in the first window after going to About This Mac, when you click underneath Mac OS X, on version 10.... the display should change to Build ...., then Serial Number....

I'm sorry but I can't locate it, I can identify 2 where "Serial number" is clearly indicated:

- WD-WX11E71DR050 and
- dE0F10C9

Do you want a copy of "Material/ATA series"?
0

These numbers are not correct. You should not select ATA Series, but rather the "Material" line at the top. See for example in this screenshot the useful information:

Re, Sanspseudo!

I'm tearing my hair out! Back home, where I was perfectly sending and receiving my emails with Mail, now I can receive my emails, but I can't send anything with this constant error message:

Unable to send the message via the Gmail server
The address XXX@gmail.com of the sender was rejected by the server smtp.gmail.com.

Select a different sending server from the list below or click Try again later to leave the message in your outbox until it can be sent.

Sending from: XXX <XXX@gmail.com>

And this affects my 3 accounts: hotmail, gmail, and yahoo.

Do you have a solution??

Hello,

We're going to try to clear this up :)

The Gmail SMTP server cannot be used to send messages from a Hotmail or Yahoo address.

Next, it's important to differentiate between IMAP and POP account types.

Hotmail is probably set up as a POP account, but if that's the case, the SMTP server for the Hotmail account needs to be that of your ISP, not Hotmail.
For example smtp.orange.fr (most common case)
(except for a secure SMTP account, in which case it will be: smtp-msa.orange.fr Port: 587 where SMTP authentication needs to be enabled)

For the Yahoo account, it's the same if it's a simple POP type. Otherwise, test what's mentioned here, namely:

POP Server: pop.mail.yahoo.fr (on activating Yahoo's POP3 option) Port 995 With SSL connection SMTP Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.fr Port 465 With SSL connection IMAP Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com (you must use SSL with port 993) Detailed configuration page (in English).

For Gmail, for an IMAP account:
smtp.gmail.com
or
smtp.gmail.com:yourgmailaddress@gmail.com

For a POP account, prefer the SMTP server of your ISP.

Note that in the Advanced preferences of the SMTP server, it is often better to use port 25 rather than leaving the default ports. (Do not confuse with the Advanced tab for the incoming port).

Gmail: By default
Hotmail: 25
Yahoo: 465

Simbagheera Posted messages 293 Status Member 7

If it can help you, incoming mail servers:
Gmail: imap.gmail.com
Hotmail: pop3.live.com
Yahoo: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Simbagheera Posted messages 293 Status Member 7

In the ports I sent you, these are the ones in Account/Account Information/Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Those in Account/Advanced:

Gmail: Port 993 (SSL is checked)
Hotmail: Port 995 (SSL is checked)
Yahoo: 993 (SSL is checked)

The "SMTP path prefix" field is not filled in for any of the 3 accounts.

Well, a radical solution, I've deleted all my email accounts.

I recreated the Gmail and miraculously it works!! Why, I don’t know!!

I’m going to recreate my 2 other accounts and I’ll come back to give you the result...
0
Simbagheera Posted messages 293 Status Member 7

Same for my other two accounts which are working again. I have scrutinized all the options and none have apparently changed since I reinstalled my accounts.
I want to emphasize that my Hotmail account, which is set up as POP, works with smtp.live.com, so I didn't have to replace live with my ISP.

The only thing I've noticed is the appearance of a SMTP tab when I open a new email (below the subject line, to the right of the tab where you can select the sending email address): https://www.cjoint.com/?BJrqJIlYdq0

That's it, a big thank you to Sanspseudo who was patient and gave me a lot of time.

SUBJECT DEFINITIVELY (I hope) RESOLVED!

The fact that for Hotmail, it can indeed work with the smtp.live.com server. It's quite random. For some it's always OK with smtp.live and for others never... When it doesn't work, you then have to use that of the ISP.

That the choice is present as shown in the screenshot is normal. (and it's convenient).

:))
