how to convert udf files

Question

Hello,

I would like to convert udf format files (after recording with a standalone DVD recorder onto a DVD RW) into divx or mpeg format to create a final DVD that can be played on the same standalone player.
I can't read this file on my PC to edit it.

I don't know if I'll be able to help you concretely, but I'll try my best ;)

Have you tried using VLC media player?

UDF is a specific "format" (ISO standard 9960) that generally corresponds to DVD-Video.
On your computer, despite the inability to play, can you see what's on the disk? If you can't, use the small software (free version) from ISOBuster to explore the disk.
Can you indicate what kind of folders and/or files are on your DVD RW?

It may also be that the "format" of the files is specific, which could complicate playback and/or make the re-encoding process impossible.

Theoretically, you need to transfer the content from the disk to the computer in order to then process the files. This is what can be problematic. Once on the computer, and unless there are exceptions, the videos should be manageable, but nothing is for sure, of course...

I haven't tried with the VLC software.
I know (from the workspace) that the file format in question is indeed UDF.
I'll keep you posted by using VLC once I've downloaded it!

For IsoBuster, install the version from the link I provided or from the official site: https://www.isobuster.com/fr/

In this case, it will just allow you to observe what is on the disc at first.
It can also be used to recover the content (step 2, the most important one...), although this function may turn out to be impossible with the free version.
The DVD must be recognized by the computer!

This recovery operation can also be done, at least in theory, with a simple "copy/paste" or with software like 7Zip, which is also not intended for that ;)

To tell you everything, a few years ago, I dealt with this kind of issue with a DVD from a Thomson recorder of a friend because I don't have one.
After numerous tests and "head scratching," I eventually managed to recover the content; I didn't know about IsoBuster back then, which I think would have made things easier for me.
I'll just leave you an image showing the oddity of this disc burned on a simple 4.7 Go DVD: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2012/38/1348178495-gym-exploartion-06.jpg
You can see that if we extract the content, the size is more than 6 Go, yet everything fits on a 4.7 Go DVD ?!?!
It resembles a DVD-Video due to its structure, but when copying the content, we realize that it is not really one.

This anecdote is a simple example illustrating a particular situation. Other people I have helped on the forum simply managed to open their DVDs from a standalone recorder using DVD Shrink. -> to copy it -> to transform it as they wanted.

So, in summary, you need to figure out what is on the disc, and especially recover the content to copy it to your computer. Because once it's on your hard drive, it is probably possible to transform it as you wish.

Good evening ziggourat,
I downloaded IsoBuster, which allowed me to see what’s on the DVD but I couldn't extract or run anything with the free version as you mentioned.
Content results:
VIDEO TS (BUP, IFO, VOB)
VTS01 (BUP, IFO, VOB)
VIDEO RM
SONATA.IF
SONATA DEBUG.IFO
VIDEO RM (BUP, DAT, IFO).
However, with 7zip, I tried to extract the VIDEO TS and VIDEO RM files from the DVD but it doesn't seem to help me at all, I didn't understand.
I used DVD Shrink, it opened the DVD and simply did a preview and that’s it.
I don't know this software very well to be honest.
In your opinion, do I have a chance of finally finding a solution with DVD Shrink?

In the case of a DVD-Video, only the AUDIO_TS (which is empty) and VIDEO_TS (containing the IFO, BUP, and VOB files) folders matter. The rest, like your VIDEO_RM folder, is useless.
If I remember correctly, the latter folder and what’s inside serves to "mark" the disc, meaning it provides information about the device that made the recording, to put it simply. It can also be the case for other files. On some devices, it could also be used to encrypt the data. All of this should be taken with caution because I'm not sure about it... :/

If DVD Shrink was able to open your disc, you have a good chance of being able to save your disk as a DVD-Video, but I can’t guarantee anything.
You check on the right, under Video, that 100% is indicated; if not, select No Compression from the dropdown list.
Then click on the "Backup!" button and choose Folder on disk while making sure to check the box "Create VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS subfolders." You also need to specify a path for your folder using Explorer, if necessary, to choose it.

In case of success of the operation, you will have succeeded in copying your disc in DVD-Video format, which will be usable as you wish afterwards.

With 7ZIP, you need to open the application and search for your disc in your drive. Once located, you should be able to extract its contents, similar to how IsoBuster would do it.
With this software, if it's feasible, there is no need to go through extraction, which is the normal procedure for using the software; you simply select the required files and drag them into a folder you've created on your computer.
The purpose of this maneuver is simply to recover the VIDEO_TS folder (and the VTS01 folder?) because that’s the "important" one.

I also see that you have a VTS01 folder containing IFO, BUP, and VOB files. I don't know what it corresponds to, but it may also be useful to try to copy it if the VOB file(s) is large.

There may be a solution to do directly what you want with Freemake Video Converter. However, I'm not sure that this software recognizes your disc. You could then choose to create a file of type AVI (XviD only), MPG (MPEG-2), or even a simple DVD-Video. Try it if you want to see...
