converting a wmv video to MP4 using VLC Solved

Question

Hello,
I successfully downloaded the latest version of VLC (2.05), but I have a problem with converting a wmv video to MP4 or Avi to play it on a Galaxy Tab. At the end of the conversion, I get an error message: "the streaming/transcoding failed. VLC could not open the encoder". The file seems to be converted to MP4 but I only have sound without the image?

Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.5.7

Finally, I managed to convert my wmv files to MP4 with VLC without any issues
When VLC opens, click on media, click on convert/save
Click on file at the top left of the window to select the wmv slide
Click on add and then click on the small arrow of convert/save at the bottom and choose convert
Type the video profile mpeg4+AAC(mP4) remembering to choose the destination folder for the converted file by adding the extension: MP4
Good luck, the conversion happens automatically.

Thank you for your quick response, but I wanted to know how VLC, which is already installed on my computer, works for converting my videos. I am satisfied with this software for the rest, as it plays all the formats I receive. I only managed to convert wmv to MP4 once, but I can't remember how?
And the tutorial didn't help me, but for me, codecs and encoding are like Latin!!!
In any case, thank you, as a last resort, I will try Freemake Video Converter with my old Windows XP computer

Just go to the menus:
Media > Convert / Save
or Ctrl+R
And select a destination file (just give it a name)
Click start and depending on the compression choice, it will take up to the length of the movie!

Open VLC. Drop down the Media menu and choose the Convert/Save option. In the File tab of the window that appears, click the Add button in the File Selection area. Choose the file to convert, then click Convert/Save at the bottom of the window. In the new window, enter a name for the resulting file in the Destination File field. Then choose the video format you want to adopt from the Profile drop-down menu (for example Video MPEG-4 + AAC). Click Start. The conversion begins.
