Application quit unexpectedly

I'm glad to know that you read my responses with interest.. :), even though I don't know which ones :))

In any case, when applications tend to "quit unexpectedly," it almost always stems from a corruption of the preference files associated with the application in question.
Often, it is enough to throw away this preference file when the application is not running, and everything will go back to normal. The application will create a brand new preference file at the next launch.

Most of the preference files are located here:
Mac_Hard_Drive / Users / username / Library / Preferences ...

So, for example, the iPhoto preference file is as follows:
Mac_Hard_Drive / Users / username / Library / Preferences / com.apple.iPhoto.plist
The vast majority of preference files end with .plist. Sometimes they end with .prefs

I really didn't quite understand this part:

When opening the Hard Drive, the list of Applications starts with "Font Book.app" (which opens) and ends with the folder "Users". This means that if I double-click on "DVD Player," the Hard Drive closes; but I keep the icons and the dock on the screen and I go back.

If the problem is that Font Book launches automatically at session startup, check in System Preferences / Accounts / your account / Login Items if the Font Book application is set to launch automatically at session startup..if that is the case, you select this application from the list, and click the - sign to remove it from the applications that launch automatically at the start of your session.

What I recommend, before considering a complete reinstallation to fix the issues, is to perform a system repair using one of the methods indicated here:

I put the iPhoto Preferences file in the trash, I opened iPhoto located in the dock. The dialog box appeared asking if I wanted to transfer the views from the Camera to iPhoto or elsewhere, I chose iPhoto.
Result: The iPhoto window appeared empty.
I transferred my photos from the backup drive.
The photos are in disarray, but the worst part is the absence of: "Sorting," "Keywords," and especially "Information."

Thank you for your response from September 12; while reviewing the mentioned operating procedure, I saw a table of 10 errors (from August 25, 2012 to October 3, 2012) that could complicate the implementation of the reinstallation.
I searched for the meaning of "error 151741" but could not find it, nor 152909, or 161351; also, there is more historical data regarding printer access, disk logging, printer errors, installation program, IORegistry state file, software update history, system event history.
All the other issues mentioned on September 12, 2012 remain.

I thought of "backing up" to a DVD (Verbatim DVD-RW 4.7 GB 4x Speed 120 min)
When inserting the new DVD, (its icon doesn't appear anywhere): only a window pops up saying: "To erase a rewritable DVD, choose how to erase it," click on quick erase, then erase, the striped bar starts and stops immediately, so click on eject.
Is the disk incompatible?
In Hard Drive, Applications opens and then quits immediately,
I open "my folder" from Finder, click on Time Machine, the window of my folder appears with its content, and I cannot access certain folders in the dock; (I am still looking for my iPhoto from before the loss of information and keywords).
The same goes for: Address Book, iTunes. Apple Works, All Accounts Made:
a window displays: the account name, the number of KB and the date of last modification and that's it.
I hope I have clarified the points causing my embarrassment; once again, I won't manage on my own. I am seriously considering taking my iMac to a repair shop unless it is still possible for me to reinstall.

I am always thinking and another question crosses my mind: I read on the site that we could download the next version of the "same animal". Could downloading Snow Leopard help organize my hard drive and consequently improve iPhoto, Time Machine, and other software?
Otherwise, I will attempt the reinstallation you recommend by backing up all folders, but where: on the desktop if possible or in Time Machine? since I cannot burn the DVD.

Installing a new version of Mac OS will not reinstall the iLife suite applications such as iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, etc...

In short, if your iLife suite applications are compatible with Mac OS 10.6, you will be able to keep them or reinstall them from your original DVD; otherwise, you will have to repurchase these softwares. For Mac OS 10.6, you need to have the latest version of the iLife suite, which is "iLife '11".

Time Machine, on the other hand, is an application that is part of the system.

Finally, you cannot download Mac OS 10.6; it was sold only on DVD. Apple Store must still have some DVDs in stock, although it is no longer officially for sale.

It was not until Mac OS 10.7 that Apple started selling its OS by download. Today, Mac OS 10.7 is no longer sold, and only OS 10.8 is officially for sale, and that via the App Store application. This "App Store" application is only available on a Mac starting from Mac OS 10.6.8.

To repair the disk, it's normal that you cannot do so when the disk to be repaired is the one currently in use by Mac OS.

To repair the usual startup disk, the Mac must start from another volume. Normally, from its installation DVD of Mac OS 10.6.

But you can also repair without an installation DVD by following the fsck -fy method.

Thank you for your patience; I retrieved the Hard Drive and all my files, or so I thought because Safari just closed unexpectedly and Time Machine won't open anymore:
I proceeded like this after exporting my photo library to LaCie.
Double click on the orange Time Machine SOS icon on the desktop:
LaCie SOS window with the following content (Excel folders, Word, Address Book (app.), mail info, Manuals, Photo Library, Read me first, Software (Mac and Windows Utilities).
Click on the green T M icon "no storage location has been set for backups"; TM Preferences - Previous Disk buttons
Click on TM Preferences: Dialog window with green TM icon, button set to Disabled
Choose a backup disk... Click: Dialog window with orange T M icon LaCie SOS 214.5 Go Buttons: Set up Time Capsule - Cancel - Select grayed out
Clicking Cancel returns to the window, Choose backup disk the button is still set to Disabled
Do I need to configure Time Capsule? Or set up Time Machine and how?
Shouldn't there be a disk space created for daily updates, right?
If I click Disk Utility then click on LaCie or Lacie SOS: dialog window Disk check; stops after 13 minutes, then Stops the check.
In summary, I still have two points to study: Safari and Time Machine (whose disk is half full) right? The procedure you recommend suggests partitioning???

I didn't understand much of this message... I will try to summarize what I think I understood.

One thing that seems quite clear:
-You copied your iPhotoLibrary photo library onto an external drive named LaCie.

Time Machine, now that's much less clear:

Double-click on the orange Time Machine SOS icon on the desktop

I don't see what this orange icon is... maybe it's something related to an application provided with the external drive?

If you have software that comes with this LaCie drive, forget it if you want to use Time Machine.

To use Time Machine, go to System Preferences on the Time Machine button. There you start by checking the box "Show Time Machine in the menu bar" to be able to do everything from the Finder menu bar.
Then, click on the "Options..." button to designate the items to exclude from the backup.
Next, click on "Select a disk" to choose the backup destination disk.

For my part, I keep Time Machine disabled. That is, the main button stays on "NO". However, I manually initiate backups from the Finder menu bar, by selecting "Back Up Now". This avoids painful backups every hour, as a daily backup is sufficient for me. (I run it every evening)

But be careful, you shouldn't have anything on the destination disk when you decide on the disk reserved for Time Machine, because the system will start by formatting it and thus completely erasing it. Once the first backup has been made, you can put files on it...
But I strongly discourage this, as there will come a time when the system will be stuck. No more space for Time Machine, that's not a problem, because the system eliminates the oldest backups to make room for the new ones, but if you put the iPhoto library on it, and at some point space runs out, iPhoto will be blocked and unable to update its library.

For the Safari issue, close this application, then
go to:
Users / your_name / Library / Preferences ... and there, locate the file
com.apple.Safari.plist
throw it away and empty the trash. Then test...

Orange LaCie icon currently: Since 2009, the LaCie icon on the desktop has been green, underneath there was a second green icon named LaCie SOS and the backup was done automatically. A spinning wheel appeared in the top right of the menu bar (it has disappeared).

Thank you for the Time Machine procedure, if I follow it, it takes me to:

Exit the Photobook backup folder.

Back up what is currently on the LaCie drive (for a volume of 214.50) to a DVD, just in case.

Then I will apply your advice:

Display TM in the menu bar, then click on "options" to designate items to exclude from the backup,

It's almost all good, but there's a hitch... if this hard drive actually contains 214.5 GB of data that needs to be backed up, you won't be able to burn it onto a DVD. A DVD only holds 4.3 GB.

Now we need to find out what exactly this LaCie external drive contains.

The problem overall, if I guess the main lines, is that when you bought this LaCie external drive, there was software included. And you installed that software. It's probably from the menu bar that you see those infamous red or green dots indicating the status of this drive.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

However, almost all of these backup or disk management software programs that come with a hard drive are not useful under Mac OS 10. At best, they duplicate Time Machine, at worst, they create chaos and don't work properly.

If you have such software installed, the best thing to do is to remove it.
From the Finder's menu bar, try quitting this software.
Go to System Preferences in Accounts and in your account, check what's in the "Login Items" tab. If you see any software related to LaCie that is set to open automatically upon login, select it and press the - button to remove it from the list.

Locate this software in your Applications folder and trash it.

The Mac absolutely does not need software to use an external drive.

Next, you need to inspect the contents of this LaCie drive and recover what needs to be recovered. For example, you can temporarily put these recoveries on your internal drive, knowing that it’s unnecessary to include what is already there (a backup of the internal drive itself). That wouldn't make sense.

Once the LaCie drive can be erased, that everything exists on your internal drive, you can declare it as a backup drive in Time Machine Preferences.

Note the logic of the thing: Time Machine backs up what is on your internal drive itself. You don't need to do anything manually. And if after a Time Machine backup, you delete something from the internal drive, that something will be deleted from future backups. At some point, that something will no longer be present on the LaCie drive either. This is because Time Machine works on a "first in, first out" basis, which means that the day the Time Machine disk is full, the system will start removing the oldest backups to make room for the new ones, since Time Machine does incremental backups.

If your goal is solely to free up space on the internal drive, to avoid having everything on that internal drive, then you need to use an additional external drive to place what bothers you on that internal drive. This brings me to the meaning of my remark when I say that "I strongly advise against"... this means that Time Machine should, as much as possible, have an external drive that is fully dedicated to it, meaning that you shouldn’t manually add files or folders alongside the backup disk image created by Time Machine.

Try to fully understand the philosophy behind Time Machine. It’s a time machine. This is to retrieve a file that existed at a certain point on your internal drive, which you deleted and want to recover. You will be able to go back in time until the date when Time Machine started deleting the oldest files due to lack of space.

Time Machine allows you to go back quite far in time because it never backs up the same thing twice. It only backs up new documents and modified files. If a file hasn't been modified for several months and is still on your hard drive unchanged, when you enter the Time Machine backup (from the Finder’s menu bar), you will see your file on multiple backup dates, but that file exists only once in Time Machine...

It may seem complex, but in reality, it's very simple for the user. You just have to really understand the philosophy of the thing.

I followed the procedure by putting the items containing LaCie in the Trash.
Currently, the following items remain in the said Trash:

A folder Backups.backupdb 2.82 GB, Location: /Volumes/Sauveg TM/.Trashes/501/Backups.backupdb containing:
a document boot.efi of 292 KB (same location)
and a folder iMac of Christian 2.82 GB, containing a list of 14 folders:

In the first "2008-12-23-18045" of 2.82 GB, a Hard drive / Applications

The second "2009-11-16-082210" of 1.4 MB: Hard drive, folder Users, folder Christian, Desktop, Annie (that's me), Photos for Mail, Pictures, Image Backup, Nikon Transfer, Nature, photo DSC_0028.JPG.
In this Christian folder at the same level as Desktop, we find Pictures, Image Backup, Nikon Transfer, Nature, photo DSC_0028.JPG.

The third "2011-11-11-075951" 464 KB: Hard drive, System, Library, CoreServices, documents boot.efi and bootX

4th and 5th same path as 3rd

Please excuse me, but right now I can't be often at my computer. So it may take some time before you get a response... sorry for some personal constraints.

To get back to your initial concern, and before going further, I've revisited this discussion a bit, and first of all, I would like to know if you managed to find your photos in any of the paths you mentioned above... have you checked them all?

If you were using iPhoto, the photos are in a file named iPhoto Library
and this file-folder is located in the folder
Users / username / Pictures / iPhoto Library
you may also have this photo library in an English path, either
Users / username / Pictures / iPhoto Library

If you know the name of your folder containing the photos, or if you were using iPhoto, you can ask a freeware like EasyFind to search for a specific name (folder name, photo name, a file), or for the term iPhoto Library by asking EasyFind to search within package contents as well, so it also searches in your backup images.

Only if you have given up on recovering your photos or other files, the simplest thing will then be to simply reformat this external disk to erase it if you can't do it otherwise. (problem with putting the files in the trash and emptying it).

The formatting procedure under Mac OS 10:

-Launch "Disk Utility" which is found in Applications / Utilities..
-In the left pane of the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the physical hard drive -not its already existing partition located just below shifted to the right, but the physical hard drive itself.
This icon bears the manufacturer's name and indicates its capacity.
-In the right pane of the window, click on the "Partition" tab (or "Partitioning," depending on the version of Mac OS 10)
-Above the area where it says "Current," replace the word "Current" (drop-down menu) with 1 partition. (or more if needed)
At the bottom of the area click on "Options..."
-Choose one of the following partition schemes:
- "GUID" if your Mac has an Intel processor
"Apple partition map" if your Mac has a PowerPC processor. (G3, G4, G5)
-Confirm
-Then in the main window, choose the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
-Give a name to this volume
-At the bottom of the window, click on "Apply."

In the Apple menu / About This Mac... you can check if the Mac has an Intel or PowerPC processor.

I apologize for bringing up the issues again:
Trash emptied!! I don't know how, but that's a good thing.

It's getting worse with iPhoto: In addition to the elements that have already disappeared or retained the numbering from the camera, I notice that some photos have vanished; "essentially" 90.
These consist of 3 series from the same date according to the numbers (N1323 to N1359, then N1374 to N1527, N1531 to N1534, plus eight solitary ones).
Subject to later verifications.

I searched the site and found that this problem is quite common.
In iPhoto Library, I created two libraries: (Film/Paper and Digitized)

On the backup copies (DVD or USB stick), those photos are also missing; some have taken on numbers from the camera.

And, cherry on top, a blank DVD-RW does not install on the Finder. Upon inserting the DVD, the window prompts to erase the disk even though it's new, and of course, I can only eject it without having seen any sign of its presence.

Well, aside from that, everything's fine.
A glimmer of a solution would reassure me, but I fear I have permanently lost those photos.
Do you think the burner is broken? In that case, I would need to consult the Technical Service, right?

it's not very clear... because,
you cannot have created multiple libraries in "iPhoto Library", since the "iPhoto Library" file is already a library in itself.

What you can do, however, is create several different libraries.
for example: iPhoto Library1, iPhoto Library2, iPhoto Library3... etc...
Note that the name "iPhoto Library" is not mandatory. It's simply the default name of the library.

If you start iPhoto while holding the alt key, it will ask you which library you want to open, or if you want to create a new one. The new library can be named as you wish and should preferably be placed in the Pictures folder.

As for the issue with the blank DVD-RW, I don't know how you proceeded, but what happens if you accept to erase it? Was it really blank?

How have you set up the Mac's behavior when inserting a blank DVD? The settings can be adjusted in "System Preferences / CD and DVD..."

Before "breaking" a burner, it is often dusty and can be cleaned with a cleaning DVD or CD available in stores. (when dust is on the laser lens of the burner, it can no longer do its job).

Perhaps the missing photos exist, but are not where you think...? If you have an idea of their names, try searching by pressing 'cmd F' in Finder... or maybe you accidentally threw them away?
