Hello everyone
I'm currently trying to repair a computer
first of all, I realized that the previous hard drive was dead
I replaced it with an old hard drive I had (Maxtor 13 GB)
the size is ridiculous, I admit.. but I just want the PC to work..
because after installing Windows XP (with the blue interface and the bar filling up in yellow) the computer restarts (which is normal)
then upon restarting, the PC tells me:
reboot and select proper boot device press any key blabla..
yet in the BIOS I checked.. that the hard drive is set as master (the jumper is also set to master)
I set the CD drive as secondary master
and I don’t care about the order of the 1st floppy =/
I should mention that this is an ASUS P4800-VM motherboard
I have a motherboard CD provided and Windows XP
if someone can help me, I would be greatly grateful. Thank you :)

It's old but a good answer is always welcome for those who will see this topic later on:
This message comes because the PC is trying to boot from a device (HDD, CD, USB flash drive, no matter which) that does not contain a boot sector (either not at all, or unreadable)
Several solutions:
- Check the boot order!
- IDE Hard Drive: Move the jumper on the Hard Drive to "Master" on the Hard Drive with the Operating System (Always check the boot order!). If that's already done, it's the disk sectors that are messed up (recoverable using a Windows 98 CD and the assistant that repairs defective sectors)
- SATA Hard Drive: Connect the Hard Drive with the operating system to the "SATA 1" port on your motherboard because the "Master" and "Slave" jumpers no longer exist on SATA drives, they are given based on their position on the motherboard (SATA 1 position = Master). If it doesn't boot (after checking the boot order), messed up sectors like before.
There you go, I hope it's explained well enough!

Hi,
I've had this type of problem before with a second SATA HDD; my hard drive was no longer recognized, and to solve this issue, I changed the SATA cable.
1/ Make sure you have the right IDE cable for your HDD, as there are 2 different ones.
2/ You can check, if you haven't already, in Event Viewer (Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools, and finally check in System to see if you have a red cross, and then click on it.

I don't think this is the case for everyone, but personally, about every month, my computer gives me this error message, I clean it, and then it gets better for a while:
you just need to open your computer and carefully vacuum inside. Be careful not to touch the components, and make sure to clean around the fans which are often covered in a thick layer of dust. Sometimes it almost looks like carpet.
Then, restart your computer, it's possible that the problem will go away.
Otherwise, some time ago, I encountered this problem and it wasn't due to dust. I went into the kind of screen in English that we all have before starting Windows (you have to press F2, F9, F11 or Delete quickly to access it), then you need to have a good English dictionary, translate what can be translated, and try to find a menu where it asks you which storage unit to "boot" from first. Make sure to remember what is already set, write it down somewhere, and then change it. Try all possibilities. Right now I have 1. The CD/DVD drive, 2. My master hard drive, 3. My slave hard drive.
And if none of the options work, put everything back the way it was before, don't touch anything else and keep asking everyone you meet if they know a bit more than you about computers, and if they would be willing to help you.
Sorry, my explanations are a bit vague, but all my knowledge of computers comes from personal tinkering, so I don't have anything clear, certain, and precise to offer.
Hoping this might still help you!

for the IDE cable
well, it’s good.. considering that during the Windows installation.. the hard drive is formatted..
and it is indeed the right cable as it says: ASUS HDD CABLE
and for your second solution: IMPOSSIBLE since the PC freezes at startup
black screen with the error message reboot and select proper boot device

Hey bro, I have the same issue... and I think it's related to the HDD.
Indeed, the HDD might be damaged, so it's not detected during boot.
But to be sure, try to make your HDD work in another PC. If it detects it, we need to look into another avenue. If not, just buy a new HDD and that's it!
Good luck! :)

Hello, I have the same problem. When my computer starts, it says "reboot and select proper boot device... press a key,"
and even if I press keys, nothing happens... In the BIOS, I have floppy then cd rom, I swapped them to see and it didn't work...
What can I do to make it work again without losing my data???

Hello,
in case of this problem you should buy another hard drive because the old one is damaged, I had the same issue as you and I can't solve it, so I'm buying another one,
+ there's only one solution, you have to change "the motherboard of your hard drive" with another motherboard.

So here's the same problem as yours, except I feel like my hard drive isn't being detected because even when I put the hard drive first, it doesn't work. Is it a cable problem? Is the hard drive dead?
My problem occurred when I changed the power supply unit.

It's been a while, but I'm answering anyway because my solution works (at least for now).
I get the same error message at startup, I press F8 just before the message appears and then, surprise, I can choose the boot hard drive, I select it, and there you go, Windows starts up perfectly... It doesn't fix the problem, but at least it allows me to save as much as possible while waiting to change the hard drive...

Hello, I checked some forums to see how it works and I wanted to know that every time I start my computer, it says "reboot and select proper boot device..." Or blah blah blah, you know the rest. The only problem is that my computer doesn't have an HDD (hard disk drive); it only has a RAM stick. I don't know why, but I tried everything, disassembling it, cleaning a bit of the dust, and still the same thing. I went into the boot settings to prioritize the RAM, but it doesn't show up or I can't see it. What should I do?
Hi, I found 3 solutions. The first one: when it says "reboot and select...", press the following keys: AltGr + Ctrl + Delete. The second one: keep pressing F7 until the computer options appear and set what's at the bottom to not be 1st floppy drive, it's the CD drive. The third one: format if it's still not working, you need to insert the installation CD for the program. P.S.: I'm having the same problem, still not resolved^^
