Repairing Windows XP Without Installation CD

Hello,

I am currently having an issue with my HP laptop running Windows XP

At startup, I get the following message on a black background with no access to the desktop:

"Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting the Windows XP setup program with the original CD. Choose "R" on the first screen to start the repair."

However, I have very important data on it that I would like to recover and not damage. Not having the installation CD, I would like to know if there is any way to get out of this situation because right now my only option is a full reset of the PC with the F11 key

If you have a solution, I thank you
Best regards

Configuration: Windows Vista / Firefox 13.0.1

start in safe mode
when you are there, choose:
"safe mode with command prompt"
At the command prompt, type: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter
