Hello,
I am currently having an issue with my HP laptop running Windows XP
At startup, I get the following message on a black background with no access to the desktop:
"Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting the Windows XP setup program with the original CD. Choose "R" on the first screen to start the repair."
However, I have very important data on it that I would like to recover and not damage. Not having the installation CD, I would like to know if there is any way to get out of this situation because right now my only option is a full reset of the PC with the F11 key

The best solution is to
1) download Acronis True Image Home and burn it onto a blank disk
2) have an external hard drive of at least 250 GB
3) restart the PC and change the settings in the BIOS to boot from the disk.
4) save the new settings and exit!
5) let it boot from the disk and choose the Acronis option (by default, it selects Windows)
6) connect the external hard drive
7) choose the Backup tab
8) click on Data Backup
9) select the files to back up
10) choose where to save them!
11) let it run and wait for the white bar to turn completely blue!
12) close the application and afterwards you will have all your documents backed up!
Goodbye and good luck!

I’m burning Ubuntu, CD seems fine after verification
but when I launch the computer, even if Ubuntu starts correctly, it “hangs” or, at least, does nothing after the loading screen

Is the backup of existing data safe this way? So, will it only recover its faulty system32 file? In that case, I'll try this afternoon and keep you posted.

With the down arrow key on the keyboard, I choose "start with the last known good configuration" (located at the bottom of the safe mode screen)
I press enter
And oh miracle, everything went back to normal without any loss of data on my XP computer

I don't want to disrupt your discussion (once again) but if Ubuntu doesn't work on a CD (like it does for me), you need to use Lili (LinuxLive USB Creator) which allows you to create a bootable USB stick with Linux on it.
