Hello,

On May 12 I received a update alert for Windows XP.

All updates installed successfully, except the Windows XP security update (KB2686509).

I tried to relaunch it manually but it's impossible.

Moreover, since then my hard drive runs fast as if it is searching for something.

The security update for Windows XP (KB2686509) keeps prompting again and again.

Could you help me?

Thank you

Best regards,

Pascal

Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 12.0

    Hello,
Click on My Computer to open it, right-click C:, click Properties at the bottom, then Disk Cleanup.
Click on More Options at the top, click at the bottom on Clean, do it then OK as soon as possible and delete, it can take a while.
Also empty all old backups, click System in Control Panel, go to the System Restore tab, check the box: Disable System Restore, click Apply then as soon as possible click OK, let it run until the OK or Apply boxes come back normally.
Close everything, then uncheck this box again to re-enable System Restore at the next startup.
You install the update again, sometimes it takes long and you must be patient; if it doesn’t want to install quickly you cancel it, you shut down the PC completely.
You restart it and let everything install, so the update is applied at shutdown and the configuration at startup.

You can also empty the pagefile.

Also check that the time is synchronized with the Internet.

    re-

you go to the left column, you follow exactly:
you click on the small + of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then, on the small + of System
then on the small + of CurrentControlSet
there, on the left you should have:

    Keyboard Layout

and to the right of Keyboard Layout, you have keys, you right-click, delete.

    Good evening,

The Windows XP SP3 KB2686509 update gave me a hard time, but I got there. I identified 2 problems. First, one or more potential errors in the registry key HK_local_machine\Currentcontrolset\control\Keyboard Layouts. If there are any, these errors are listed in a Faultykeyboard.log file that is created when you launch the update installation. To fix these errors, you must delete all content of this key and install the contents of a kbdmaps.reg file; this file can be downloaded from http://www.devhardware.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3240 by replacing the .txt extension of the downloaded kbdmap.txt file with .reg, then double-click to install the obtained kbdmaps.reg file, and then restart the computer. Next, uninstall, if installed, the Microsoft Silverlight program. You can then install the update, which is directly downloadable from Microsoft's site. If you wish, you can then reinstall Silverlight.

Attention : this is not [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts]
      but [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts]

Thank you for this solution which helped me a lot. I just have a small addition to add:
Once you have followed Tecutli's tutorial properly, if the problem persists, no worries.

      1. After the installation fails, open the file %SystemRoot%\Faultykeyboard.log, it contains a list of DLLs.

      2. In the registry open the key
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts]
and delete all sub-keys corresponding to the DLLs listed.

      3. Re-run the KB2686509 installation.

    Go to: C\windows\softwaredistributiondownload
    Delete all contents in download

Then, try to install it manually: --> KB2686509

Restart the PC and check again with Windows Update if everything is OK.

    Hello,

I’m taking the liberty to intervene; here is the same problem as yours, solved by deleting the key in the registry, following the Microsoft information:

    https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-25157352-pb-maj-windows-xp-kb2686509#p25164745

    Hello everyone

Thank you all for your help,

In the links you gave me, all of them say this:

    --------------------
Open the Faultykeyboard.log file located in the %windir% folder. This log file contains information about registered keyboard layout files that are not located in the %Windir%\System32 folder. The contents of the log file look like this:

    Keyboard1.dll
    .\Layoutfiles\keyboard2.dll
    C:\Windows\System\Kbda1.dll
    -----------------------

However, I do not have these 3 items in the Faultykeyboard.log file:
    Keyboard1.dll
    .\Layoutfiles\keyboard2.dll
    C:\Windows\System\Kbda1.dll

Here is what I have in the Faultykeyboard.log file:

    kbdsp.kbd
    kbdsp.kbd
    kbdno.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdus.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdus.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd
    kbdla.kbd

    Curious, isn’t it?

So I can’t copy the files listed in the Faultykeyboard.log into the System32 folder.

    Strange indeed...

I found a link that deals with the subject and that also has in its Faultykeyboard.log the same things as me in .kdb https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/kb2686509-repeatedly-fails-with-error-code/0deeacb6-115c-419d-ac37-03ff8927b79c?tab=AllReplies&page=4 Unfortunately it's in English and I don't know the language.

They talk initially about: for example, whether the Num Lock is on or off. It can be named Num Lock or Caps Lock as well. Control the time at which you perform updates as well, whether they are automatic etc... See if they are properly configured with the firewall.

    Hello,

I’m reaching out again for advice, even if you can’t locate these files, go to the registry and do this:

    Hello

    I have performed the backup

To delete any Registry entry that references the keyboard layout file in the following Registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Keyboard Layout

I don’t know how to find
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Keyboard Layout

To delete the keyboard layout file, how can I know which file to delete?

    Thank you

    Reassembling in CurrentControlSet /control/

    I found:

    Keyboard Layout
    Keyboard Layouts

    Is that it?

If yes, should I delete them?

    Thanks

      Good evening,
Do not uninstall anything without backing up the Registry on external media first, for example, more prudent, because if there's a problem you can always reinstall.
Click on the one with Layouts, then add this next to Layouts with the \ :
      Keyboard Layouts\0000040C

Then close the registry, restart the PC and try to reinstall the update.

    Attention I didn't find anything in CurrentControl/

But in a subdirectory which is:

    CurrentControlSet /control/
    And
    Keyboard Layout
    Keyboard Layouts
are not files but also directories

    I suppose that changes everything

So should I delete these 2 directories
    Keyboard Layout
    Keyboard Layouts
with everything in each of them?

    Thank you

    Hello

After a long absence, I’m returning just now.

I deleted the two directories I had previously saved, namely:

    Keyboard Layout
    Keyboard Layouts

    I restarted my PC

I tried the automatic update: still impossible

I tried the manual installation: still impossible.

I repeated the process several times, but still impossible.

There must be something odd on my PC for it to never work...

    Thank you

    Hello,

Don’t be sorry, on the contrary, I’m already happy to have your help.

I know how to be patient

Ah I forgot to mention that before all these latest updates I had just changed my keyboard and my mouse to a wireless USB keyboard+mouse from Logitech; could that be the problem? Although I also put the old one back in the meantime to see, but the problem was the same.

Well, let’s take some time to think...

    Best regards
