Hello,
I would like to know whether downloading data to an external hard drive leaves traces on the PC used for that purpose and whether there is a possibility to recover them

"Does downloading data to an external hard drive leave traces on the PC used?"
Yes.
It is possible that the downloaded files remain part of the temporary internet files.
There is also the history of downloaded files (though I don’t know exactly where it is), containing metadata of the files in question (download size, file name, probably also the date).
And also the open and close times of all software used (Windows tools, Internet Explorer...).
"Is there a possibility to recover them?"
Yes... but what do you mean by 'recover'?

Because notices don’t tell the whole story...
But not nothing either, huh!-

"It is possible that the downloaded files are still part of temporary internet files"
It only counts if the files were downloaded from the Internet.
However, when transferring from an internal hard drive to an external hard drive, whether the data remains on the PC (the internal drive) depends on whether the data transfer was a 'copy' or a 'move'. -
