Table of contents issues in Word

Hello,

I need to write my thesis but I'm about to throw my computer out the window. I'm particularly bad at office applications, let's be clear... I've been trying for hours to organize my table of contents as follows:
Part 1:....
Chapter 1:....
1.1 ....
1.2....
1.3...
Chapter 2:...
etc
then
Part 2:
Chapter 1:....
Chapter 2....
Part 3:
Chapter 1...

It's impossible to do because Word doesn't understand that my chapters should be renumbered starting at 1 in part 2. So nothing works for the subsections either. By the way, I want to put "Chapter 1" as the title and not "1. Chapter 1" which would be weird. Whenever I try to 'define the numbering' myself, a window pops up: 'this value is less than the previous entry, please choose a higher value.'
I'm going crazy, please help me :-(

Configuration: Windows 7 / Internet Explorer 7.0

A simple thing: right-click on the first number in the list to modify (6.1 in the given example), click on "adjust list indents," and in "numbering format, enter the numbers as you want them to appear (for example 1.1).

There you go.
