TVs are not computers!
I explain that some current TVs allow playing external videos via USB; the use of "codecs" by the manufacturer is limited to the most common ones, which is why some "services" like MKV subtitles are absent.
Will LG ever update this?? The answer lies with LG.
However, on a computer, VLC plays a lot of things and allows for updates that become necessary at some point. This is the fundamental difference between a TV, even if it's sophisticated, and a computer that remains quite accessible to developments.
I use a laptop connected via HDMI to the TV and with VLC I have no gaps. Of course, this comes at a price (modest nonetheless), that of versatility and peace of mind. (mobility as well, think about vacations)

VLC is a separate software that cannot be compared to playing MKV files on your TV, especially regarding subtitles.
Indeed, they are not necessarily supported; could you please check if your MKV files are in H.264 format?

Hello, I have the same issue, (very recent LG TV, and series and movies on USB drives, the subtitles show up on my computer with VLC, but not on the TV! Anyway!)
So I found a solution: embed the subtitles! That is to say, they must be integrated into the video. Well, I don’t know much about computers, but I use this software: http://www.commentcamarche.net/download/telecharger-34059337-avi-recomp, and it works quite well (a bit long to convert, huh ^^). Anyway, I haven't found any other solution because otherwise, the subtitles either don’t appear, or only the first few minutes show up! So, it’s a good alternative :) But if someone has another solution, I’m all ears :)
