My PC starts up and shuts down immediately. Solved

Question

My PC has been working very well for 2 years. But for the past week, when I turn it on, it starts up (power supply OK, fans running OK, general pulse OK) but it lasts 5 seconds, then it shuts down.

The most annoying part is that it goes into safety mode: when I press the power button, nothing happens. I have to turn off the power supply and reconnect everything.

But it doesn't restart right away. It goes through this several times in a row. Sometimes, I try removing the battery, rebooting the BIOS, but it’s the same: it starts and then shuts down.

Then, magically, it lasts longer and longer between shutdowns until it finally boots up.

Once started, it doesn't crash anymore. This happens every day because I turn it off at night.

Does anyone have any idea? Who could I see for a diagnosis? etc..

Hello everyone, I’m taking the liberty of replying to this topic even though it’s been around for years. My PC has the same issue, it shuts down after 2 seconds. After following your various advice (power supply, motherboard, motherboard battery), the problem persists. After a week of searching, it’s the power switch button that’s to blame. It was probably stuck in the "off" position, which prevents the PC from starting up. I disassembled the button and the switch, readjusted the spring, and it seems fine now. So if you have young children playing with your PC by pressing the buttons multiple times because it’s funny at their age, consider this avenue. Good luck to all.

A beginning of a response.

After disconnecting everything (only the power supply to my graphics card and fan remain), I connected an old IDE hard drive. My power supply is a 350W.
Everything works fine, I am able to boot.
If I replace the IDE hard drive with my SATA, it does not start (see problem in the first message).
I put my IDE back, connect the CD reader and my burner, it works. But, under Windows, if I access the CD drive, my computer shuts down.
So I thought about my power supply.

I conducted the following tests with a 400W
I connected my ATA hard drive (+ graphics card and fan), my computer starts but crashes during Windows startup.
After several attempts, I manage to get into Windows, and after a few minutes, it crashes: the system freezes and nothing responds --> mandatory reboot.

So I suspect my power supply and/or my hard drive to be responsible for my problem.
What do you think? Is the power of my power supply too low? Is my hard drive dead?
Where can I find utilities that give me the general voltages of my machine under Windows and diagnostics on the state of my ATA hard drive (which may also be affected)?

Thank you for any help or information you can provide; I've been stressed about this issue for 2 weeks, which I remind you occurred out of the blue.

Good evening  I had a similar problem on a PC, it came from the battery located on the motherboard (it's a flat, round 2032 battery)  it should provide 3V (to be tested)

I will rather go for the battery solution even though my problem is quite strange.
Indeed, I don't think it's overheating since the fan I've added (can't remember the brand) keeps the CPU around 48°-52°. Moreover, this issue occurs when starting a machine that hasn't been used for a week, so it's cold.

Yesterday I managed (after 30 minutes) to turn on my machine. It ran all night, and the CPU temperature this morning is perfect.

As for the battery, how/where can I test the voltage? Are these batteries standard or do I need to check the specifications of mine before replacing it?

to test the battery, you need to remove it and measure the voltage

generally, batteries are CR2032 lithium ones, which are easy to find
for you, this is the case; I checked the schematic of your motherboard on the Asus site
the only thing left to know is whether it is soldered or if it is in a holder.

I changed the battery, nothing.
I replaced the power supply (Maxin Power 580W) and it started working like new.

I had indeed heard that, but choosing a brand power supply with good amperage on 12V makes all the difference.

Anyway, problem solved, but there's another issue with the hard drive this time (I'll open another post).

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me...

So a friend gave me his PC because it shuts down on startup,
The hard drive is properly connected, everything seems fine, it's just that the PC restarts at startup (So the screen goes into sleep mode and comes back on at the same time as the PC)

I tried his hard drive in my PC and… the same problem!!
I tried setting my hard drive to MASTER and his to SLAVE in my PC and then in his, same issue...
I don’t understand anything, I think his hard drive is dead but I would still like to recover his data. How can I connect it and manage to start my PC normally???

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's fine, I managed to set my friend's hard drive to SLAVE and mine to MASTER,
I backed up his data (photos, music, etc.) on my hard drive
But now I would like to format and reinstall Windows XP on his hard drive which is connected to my PC as SLAVE...

I don't know how to do it, can you help me??

Salut, c'est un problème de surchauffe du microprocesseur ; même si le ventilateur fonctionne bien, il y a une pâte thermique qui se trouve entre le microprocesseur et le ventilateur, alors si cette pâte (de couleur blanche qui ressemble à de la colle) n'existe plus sur le microprocesseur, alors ce dernier chauffe et s'éteint automatiquement. Si aussi elle (la pâte) est juste sur les bords du microprocesseur, il suffit de la prendre et de la mettre au milieu du microprocesseur. Tout va marcher.

It's Liliane 999 who is right, (at least for me)...
I took apart my fan, and the paste between the processor and the fan was completely burnt.

So, I cleaned my processor and the fan really well...

"it's important not to leave any traces of the old paste"

put on new paste and everything works perfectly.
