Laptop shuts down 5 seconds after powering on Solved/Closed

Question

Hello everyone, so here I am facing a problem with my laptop (HP Compaq nx 5000, Centrino 1.5GHz, 256 MB). It starts up (the fan kicks in) and then shuts down 5 seconds later, without anything displaying on the screen. Notably, not all the LEDs light up. It seems that the access to the hard drive is not happening properly. If I persist by trying to restart it about twenty times, the computer eventually decides to turn on, Windows starts, and everything works perfectly, just like before. I just tried to turn it on 25 times, and on the 25th try, it worked... I asked for an opinion from a retailer, and he mentioned a faulty motherboard (while also offering me one of his computers…). Do you have any idea?? I want to point out that I have tried starting it only on AC power or on battery (same problem) and that I have tried pressing the power button for 30 seconds without the battery or power supply, but with no results. Listen, is the fan located at the bottom of the laptop? If so, there is probably a ventilation problem that causes the processor to heat up quite a bit, so to secure the device, the computer shuts down.

If NOT, disassemble it and check the connections of the hard drive, CD-ROM... And maybe do some dusting...

I also have an HP nx 5000 and I have the same problem; it seems to come from a bad connection between two parts of the motherboard. For proof, when I place the laptop closed and upside down for a certain period, it restarts without any issues; otherwise, I have to press down a bit on the casing above the F9 to F12 keys.
I also disassembled the laptop; there is a mini motherboard near the ER keys, about 2*3 cm², which is screwed to the main motherboard (and seems to be connected by a wire to a spot near the modem, but I don't know what it's for), but at first glance, it doesn't seem to be electrically connected; however, if you try to restart your computer with these two components detached, it will have exactly the same symptoms.
After tightening these few screws, the laptop no longer shows these symptoms (at least for me), but after a while, the problem returned... I haven't tried changing the screws; I don't really have the courage to open my laptop again, and I don't have a Torx screwdriver anymore.

I have another problem; could those who have had this issue let me know if they have the same one, to see if it's related.
When the laptop runs on battery, if it uses very few resources for a short time, it freezes, meaning the screen stays stuck on the image, and I can't see the mouse cursor moving... I have to turn it off by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. However, if I'm watching a movie (as long as I don't pause it) or listening to music or if I'm plugged into the mains, I've never encountered this problem.

Hi .. I had the same problem with my computer,  I tried to disassemble it and I saw that there was a lot of dust :S  so I vacuumed it and HOP problem solved :)   huhu I hope this helps you! ++

Hello,

same issue with shutting down after 5 seconds (on battery and on AC).
I pretty much agree with WashTray regarding the small daughter board (with buttons and indicators).
I was thinking it might be a loose connection with the switch (as if it were being pressed down, like forcing the phone to turn off). So I decided to desolder the button and replace it. Result is the same, still the same issue.

WashTray, how long have you placed the small wedge?
I’m worried, on my end, that this might lead to other soldering defects in the long run. If I have the courage, I'll replace the connectors with ribbons.

I'm having exactly the same problem with exactly the same machine. There must be a unique solution for all, and it seems to me, although I don't know anything about it, that after disassembling and reassembling the thing several times, the issue lies with the power connector. I cleaned the motherboard with acetone and placed a small wedge underneath, right next to the connector, to bend the board closer to the spot most likely to restart the device when pressed. But the improvement didn't last, and the problem returned just as quickly and stubbornly. I've also noticed that a piece of photographic film placed between the heatsink arm of the microprocessor and the connector kept the machine running for a while, and it seemed like the issue was defeated, but as soon as I removed the film, the computer stopped. However, even with that, the problem came back as before. I didn't want to attempt any wild repairs, and I hope that some of you have found the solution, which looks a lot like a manufacturing defect in the HP Compaq nx range. Motherboards are very rare. I thank in advance anyone who would be willing to contribute to fixing the computer by suggesting protocols or procedures.

Well, almost a year later I'm joining the ranks of this famous problem encountered with the nx5000, which is actually a very good machine but which has had the same issues as you since the day before yesterday.
I was leaning more towards a problem with the BIOS since it either gives me the same problem as you (when it's disassembled) or it starts up and goes through a memory countdown, then shows a black screen!
For your information, mine has never had any issues with overheating as the processor never exceeded 35° on average and a maximum temperature of 75°!

I have the same problem with my NX 5000. It had been shutting down after 5 seconds for 2 days.
I tried to open it but I gave up.
I still managed to locate the 2*3 component that BVR mentioned.
It started up immediately.
For the past year, I will keep it plugged in permanently; only the screen turns off.

It's that simple,

Remove the battery from your phone, unplug the computer, and press the Power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual currents.
Then, start it up without the battery using just the power; it should boot up, then reinstall your battery.
If it doesn't work with only the battery, then it needs to be replaced!

It should work.
