Hello,

It happens quite often that the Freebox fails to renew the DHCP leases. In fact, I say "quite often," but I feel like it's every time multiple computers are connected at the time of renewal.

The solution is simple, just reboot the Freebox. But the problem is, sometimes I'm not physically at home and want to connect to my computer... Or I might not have access to the Freebox (well, when there are guests over, they take over the living room, and on Sunday morning, I'm not going to wake them up for that :p), or I might not feel like rebooting it, for one reason or another. And so, this simple solution doesn't help me.

This problem occurs even though I’m supposed to have a "permanent" lease and a fixed local IP (otherwise, I wouldn't be able to connect from outside for sure). Here, I admit I don't understand what could be happening! Why does it feel the need to renew my lease? :'(

Would you have an explanation, and even better, a solution to my problem?

Additionally, I would like to know if it's possible, under Windows XP, to enable the DHCP service only to obtain the DNS server address, and not for IP address allocation (that way, I can set a local IP on my computer without asking the Freebox's permission, and poof, no more problem!). When I uncheck "obtain my IP address automatically" in the TCP/IP configuration screen, I can no longer check its DNS equivalent… Is this a structural limitation of DHCP, a silly limitation of Windows, or a silly limitation of the interface? (And in the latter case, is it workarounds, for example, via a "shell" command?)

Thank you in advance,

Xavier

Hello,

Yes, I know that I can set static DNS, but I don't want to! On the contrary, I want to set a static IP while keeping the DNS provided by my FreeBox.

Otherwise, I did try last time to force the lease renewal with the ipconfig command, but unsurprisingly, it doesn't change anything since the FreeBox is already trying to do it and failing.

Moreover, it seems to me that my lease was permanent, as indicated in the NAT configuration interface of the FreeBox, when directly associating the IP to the MAC address of my computer (well, the wifi card)... I can't check right now because I'm not home (and I don’t know my Free credentials by heart :) )

Thanks anyway!

Xavier

I just looked on the Freebox page...

First, run the command ipconfig /all to get your MAC address. Make sure to write it down...

Then go to the Free website / my account: log in with your phone number and password / my Freebox / configure the router...

You'll see a section for permanent leases.... and so there's a section with IP addresses where you can enter the static IP number you want for your computer... then the MAC address you obtained from the ipconfig /all command

You paste (probably by copy-pasting) it into the right section. Then you save and reboot the Freebox.

On the Windows side, set it to automatic; the Freebox will always give you the same address. If it doesn't work? It might be that it isn't correctly receiving the MAC address of the network card. That can happen.
