Beware of scams: motorhome giveaway

Hello,
I want to inform you about scammers from Benin!
I saw on the internet: donation of a camper van because of an old couple...
So I immediately sent a message to the giver, thinking it was true!
Here is the message I sent to him: (I kept it on my laposte.net)
"

Good evening,
We are still interested in your camper van, here is my address: *****
********: here is also my phone number: ******. Thank you very much and have a good evening!"

Here is his response:

"Hello,
We have just read your message regarding the donation of our camper van, which is still valid. It is a vehicle in perfect working condition with no mechanical issues and ready to go. We are a French couple married for 10 years without having any children. We tried in several ways to have at least one, but to no avail. That's when we met an old friend who attended the University of Cotonou named Mathurin, currently a deputy in the national assembly of his country. He proposed to us the traditional medicine of his country, which he considers very effective, and we have been here since last Friday. My husband and I are staying with him here in Cotonou for at least 6 months to find our satisfaction. And if we decided to make this gesture of generosity, it is due to the strong message from the Holy Father, who is visiting Cotonou since Friday and who, in his last message, urges everyone in difficult situations like ours to do charitable work and good faith. Thus, my husband and I have decided to donate our vehicle to anyone who can make good use of it and maintain it properly to mark this memorable event, as we are believers, and for us, being in Cotonou at the same time as the Holy Father is something truly important since it is often said that chance does not exist. Before we left, we took the time to entrust the vehicle to our mechanic in Bordeaux. So if you are interested in bringing the camper van to your home, please promise to take very good care of it and, if possible, keep us updated about it as soon as we return. We can then put you in touch with the transporter who will take care of bringing the camper van to your home at our expense.
You have the photos of the vehicle below. And where do you live?
Best regards, Mrs. ******

Then I replied to her, taking her story seriously
"Thank you for your generosity!"

So she responded:

"Good evening
Thank you for your interest in our camper van, which is available to anyone who can properly maintain it and make good use of it, so that when we return to France, we can visit your address and you promise to send us photos of our camper van upon receipt.
I inform you that we have just passed your contact details to the delivery person who will contact you about bringing our camper van to your home. Thank you for keeping me informed. Have a good evening to you and your little family."

Then I replied:

"Good evening,
Thank you for your response, we are looking forward to welcoming your camper van. By the way, we would be very happy if you visit us at our home after your return to France. You promised to send us pictures of your camper van; we promise that we will send them to you! We wish you happy holidays and a wonderful New Year. Good evening and see you soon!" (Moreover, she had mentioned it would be at THEIR expense)

She then responded:

"The delivery person just confirmed his visit to your home on Thursday; please let us know if that works for you so he can come by and deliver it to you. Thank you ******. "

Then we replied (thinking the camper van was coming Thursday):

"Hello,
Yes, Thursday works for us; I confirm. Thank you for this donation; you are very generous. We wish you good luck for the future. Have a great day and see you soon."

She then responded:

"It's OK for Thursday; the transport costs will be at our expense.
Thank you for your trust, but please make good use of it. "

Then she called us and said:

"Hello ... the camper van will therefore come on Thursday; you need to pay the transport costs via: Western Union."

Then I said:
"No, sir, I will not pay in advance; I do not send money to someone I do not know! "

Then he said (in a strange voice):

"No, no, no, sir, I am not asking you to pay in advance, but pay by transfer, do not provide the transfer number, and when the delivery is made, you can give me the transfer number (in fact, in the Republic of Benin, there is no need for a transfer number; that’s why he’s asking for the transfer!) .

Then I said:

"OK "

We are Thursday, and then I called him back saying: "Hello, sir, is the camper van on the road? "

He replied on the phone:

"Yes, yes, the camper van is on the road, but for the delivery to come tonight, at 5:00 PM, you need to pay the transfer " (he told me the camper van is on the road but payment is needed, and if you read the previous message, he said the transport costs were at their expense! What's up with that?!)

Then I said:

"Okay, so I'll wait for the camper van to arrive, and once it gets here, I will pay the transport costs."

Then he said: "No, the delivery person does not accept cash because he could be robbed; you need to pay by transfer (or check) via Western Union."

Then I told him: "No, no, sir, I will not send money before delivery; since the mechanic does not accept cash, I will give him either a check for 550 euros, or we will go to a post office to send you the money via Western Union. "

He replied: "But sir, he cannot deliver to you because he is not sure of having his money... (he stammered)

I replied (being frank): "NO, SIR, ARE YOU TAKING ME FOR A FOOL?"

He said nothing and stammered...

Then I said: "Goodbye, sir."

Here is how people try to scam to get money without even having a camper van. Thank you for taking the time to read this entire text, and be careful about this.

Here is almost the same scammer (or the same one).
Here is the last email I received in response to my email regarding my doubts about their offer.
This confirms the same origin of the scam.

    Hello.

I have just taken note of your response regarding

the offer for our Converted Van:

Brand: Volkswagen - Model: Transporter Reimo - Consumption: Diesel

    Year: 1994 - Mileage: 215000 - Gearbox: Manual 4 Sleeping Places

    4 Registration Places. 12/230V Length: 4.66 m - Width: 1.84m -

Empty weight: 1880 Kg - Loaded Weight: 2700 kg - Timing belt: OK. Technical inspection: OK.

    Brake hoses/steering links/glow plugs ok.

Pads/discs front and rear ok. Regular maintenance.

All fabrics and curtains are very clean and in good condition

and thank you for all the interest shown, it reassures

both my partner and me a lot.

For my part, I introduce myself, Mrs. Xavoier Caroline and I live in Toulouse in

the 31400 (Haute-Garonne) France. But due to an unforeseen professional relocation

of my artistic career that makes me travel a lot

    (Artist-Plastician-Decorator), we are currently away

in a small countryside outside France and for a long time

    (Sainte Haie-Vive).

That is why we intend to offer this Converted Van

which served us during our tours and trips in France, to anyone

interested and able to maintain it since we will stay there for a

duration that is yet to be determined.

As a result, unable to take it with us due to bulkiness and too high export taxes,

we had to store it along with its maintenance invoices

and keys at a Private Structure for Custody, Maintenance, and

Regional Transport since 4 months that we have been away

from (Toulouse) to (Sainte Haie - Vive).

It is therefore responsible for the Custody, Maintenance and
    delivery to your home

of this van using your complete contact details:

    Name...........................

    First Name........................

    Phone...........................

    Street...........................

    City.........................

    Postal Code...................

    Country.........FRANCE............

Which you will have to confirm to us in your next message

If this interests you and fits of course with your search.

We are a couple close to sixty without children and do not think

to return to France in the short term due to some personal

    health reasons as well.

To confirm the delivery, we will have to cover the registration fee
    details.

However, you will only have to participate in these few costs:

    - Transport, Custody as well as Maintenance.

    - The costs for establishing a (Donation Act)

certificate of transfer proving and attesting to the offer of this Van.

Without this transfer certificate, the name change cannot take place

once delivery is made and the van is at your disposal.

This certificate will serve as proof and guarantee in good faith.

According to information, you will have €1430 in charges.

No additional fees to foresee. Vehicle in very good condition and

ready to leave. Once the certificate is established and signed properly

by us, the donor, and you, the beneficiary, along with the

legal representatives of the prefecture of our countryside, we will

then send it by express mail to the

    carrier.

Awaiting your complete contact details for the registration and

    delivery appointment with this carrier.

Mrs. Xavoier. Caroline & Mr. Fondard. Bruno

    C/97 18 Avenue Des Gouverneurs - Route Républicaine ;

    015 Bp 7891 - Free Zone

    Phone: 0022 - 99701 - 7858

    00229 (Sainte - Haie Vive)

Looking forward to hearing from you or a phone contact

    Best regards

P.S.: The van is in very good condition and we will be very happy to talk to you on the phone for more knowledge and

    further information.

      Hello
The Rapido 996 Mercedes motorhome is still available for donation with cruise control,
Mercedes engine, 67,000 km; Efoy fuel cell; 4 batteries, 3 of which are maintenance-free; 2 solar panels; awning plus a 4.50m x 3m awning all closed; 2 new tires at the back plus 1 spare tire; gas detector; mosquito screen door; 2 LPG cylinders; 2 double beds; large fridge and large storage in perfect condition.

      REASON FOR DONATION
I am currently in distress as I have just lost my husband, aged 55, in a cardiac accident. Following this, I am giving away everything related to his past because I keep having nightmares when I remember certain objects. I am on vacation this week for mandatory rest prescribed by the doctor. Therefore, I am leaving the motorhome in the hands of an honest delivery person, whom I trust, who could move the motorhome at no cost to you since I have already covered the delivery fees myself prior to my relocation, so the delivery will be made to your home for free.
The 850 euros mentioned in the ad represent various maintenance expenses I have incurred for the motorhome. Please be aware that you need to pay the 850 euros.
I ask that you provide me with the following information to allow me to put you in contact with the delivery person. I would like to inform you through this email that all the documents for the motorhome are in order, namely: (the registration certificate, the maintenance log, the insurance policy, the certificate of non-pledge, the OK CT, and the deed of donation issued by the prefecture to finalize the donation due to my absence. So if you are really interested and capable of taking care of my motorhome and not to resell it, please send me your complete contact information as follows so that I can pass it on to my delivery person for an appointment based on your availability.
      Name......................................
      First Name:........................
      Home Address.................................
      Postal Code...........................
      City:........................................
      Phone:...........................................
      Desired Day for Delivery...........................

      Best regards

No, but no, you have to be completely stupid to think that people we've never heard of would send an email to give away a camper van! It's obvious right away that it's a scam! And even worse when we're told that we need to send money?? Are there really people who fall for this??
