Trash icon not updating anymore

Hello,

I changed the Recycle Bin icons (empty and full) in Windows because I find them really ugly...
I went to Personalize>Change desktop icons and replaced them with new ones in .ico format, so far, everything works.

However, every time I delete a file, the icon doesn't refresh; I have to press F5, the same goes for when I empty the Recycle Bin...

Thank you for your help.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Google Chrome

You go into the registry with regedit, you search for the name of your icons,

you'll find them a few times in "DefaultIcon" folders

you add ",0" after the names (without quotes)

    example for me:

    %SystemRoot%\StarWars.ico,0
    %SystemRoot%\StarWars.ico_b,0

and so it refreshes the icon of the recycle bin well, tested on w7 and w8

and you can well use .ico files with transparency because the bmp format does not support it.

      Hello,
this solution seems to be the most relevant, but I can't find the name of my icons (custom) in the registry.
They are located in a folder "icon" in "my images."

      I am on w8.

      Can someone help me?

I also confirm that it works perfectly well on Windows 10. Let me explain how I proceeded (on Windows 10, mind you)

Step 1 You press the Windows key + s for the search and type regedit

Step 2 You open regedit and there you will see several key names, click on "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" once with a simple left click

Step 3 You press Ctrl + f and enter this {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} then we will click on "Find Next"

Step 4 You will expand the folder "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" and you will see a "subfolder" named "DefaultIcon," click on it.

Step 5 As for me, I have three entries with (Default /empty/full), you right-click on each element and click on "Modify," the value data starts with ("%USERPROFILE%"/folder where the icons are located/icon name) basically for me, there you put the famous ,0 at the end of each of the three entries!

      Normally it should work!

P.S.: Tip, make a backup of the registry in question before each modification https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/322756/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows

      Thanks to iomfr!

I don't really see the connection between the programs and an icon...
And even, which program should I associate with what?

You go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs, you will find a section on the left to set Windows defaults. Try that and then we'll see something more complicated... to be continued.

ON WINDOWS 7, IT'S MORE COMPLICATED; YOU HAVE TO ADJUST THIS IN ERGONOMICS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. BUT THERE IS A DESKTOP AND ICONS CONFIGURATION PROGRAM. OTHERWISE, RESTART THE PC AND PRESS F8 BEFORE WINDOWS STARTS. IN THE MENU, CHOOSE "LAST GOOD CONFIGURATION..." AND WE'LL SEE... TO BE CONTINUED.

      @L44

A method that worked with W2000 (I know it's old!)

You right-click on the recycle bin and go to properties
      You select "Do not move,........."
      and you confirm

      You restart your computer.

      Once back on your desktop
You right-click on the recycle bin icon then properties
You switch back to "custom size"
      you confirm

normally this should fix your recycle bin.

    I FOUND IT!!!!!!!

Actually, you need to save the chosen image for the icon in .bmp format instead of .ico!

You can simply change the format of your image in Paint.
    For dummies ;-) :
    - right-click on the image
    - open with - Paint
    - save as - bmp 24bit
    And!

Then you will use this image for customization.

    Super easy!
When I think that I was rummaging through iconcache.db on the advice of so-called pros.

    Isn't life beautiful?

      Not on Windows 7 apparently...
But I found a software that allows you to modify the appearance of Windows, including system icons, it's called CustoPack Tools: http://www.custopack.com/en/

    Yes yes, on Windows 7.
And I searched for a while before finding the solution.

Personally, I’m fed up with software to download to tweak things. My old PC had become a mule with 50 programs on each side!
