convert a [windows movie maker] file

Hello, I created a movie (a montage) with WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER and I would like to convert it to a Windows Media file because when I try to open it with Windows Media Player it says: "The player cannot play the file. It is possible that the player does not support the file type or the codec used for compression." So if you can help me, thank you!

Hello Aude, you wanted to know how to convert them to .AVI files. In fact, you just need to click on "Save to my computer" and choose a location and a name, click "Next," once you're there click on "More choices" and check "Other settings." In the dropdown list, choose DV-AVI (PAL) and click Next. It will then save the video to your computer, and that's it, you'll have it. However, the file saving may take a few minutes.

Hi, when you export your movie it is already in wmv (Windows Media Video) format. Try reinstalling the Media Player codecs (which version do you have?).

Hello everyone!! So I think I can respond to your problem, at least I hope so!! To convert the movie maker project so that it can be played on Windows Media, you need to::

-the finished project, click on "publish to the web"
-then, you will be asked to name the project, do so
-click on "next"
-click "next" again
-then this message appears "No video hosting provider is currently available for your country or region" and below this message it says "save a copy of the video on my computer," click on it and you're good to go!!

Hi jojobull, I'm currently right in the middle of the subject (Problem). The issue is that the file is saved as .AVI, but is not accessible either with Studio 9 or VLC Media Player. So we're not any further along. Catch you later!

Hello and thanks for the info.
For Windows Media Player it's fine, but my goal is as follows:
1) In WMM:
- Extract a clip from a video captured with Studio 9 from a DV camcorder
- Add scrolling titles
- Save it as AVI
2) In Studio 9 SE (which does not have the "scrolling titles" option):
- Use the obtained file to integrate it into the video to be created
Result: Studio 9 cannot open the file created in WMM, even though the codecs are identical:
dvsd dvc/dv video (verified with Gspot); this happens whether or not there are titles.

Hello, I have the same problem as you, and I'd also like to burn the edit, but it's impossible because the Movie Maker file is not compatible... Hello,
I also have videos that I made from my camcorder using Windows Movie Maker. You can do whatever you want!!!
The problem is! I was just given a 500 GB multimedia external hard drive, but unfortunately, I can't watch my videos which are in AVI, even though this drive accepts them?? My TV screen says "codec not supported"?? Can someone explain what I need to do?

Indeed, I tried your solutions, but I have Windows Vista and "save on my computer" doesn't exist.
So once my video is finished, on the left I click on publish to "this computer"
A window appears, you click on next, then another one appears, you check the box "other settings" (and next to it it should say -DV-AVI(PAL)-. Then click on next and you're done
You all really complicated things, even for me when it was all very simple. Good luck ;)

Hi everyone, I think I've found the solution
well to convert a Movie Maker project into a video playable with Media Player, it's pretty simple under Vista. In Windows Movie Maker, you need to click on "Publish a movie". This option is present in the "File" menu. Once the window is open, click on "Publish to this computer". For the other options, we leave them as they are, click on next and there you go (although you'll have to wait a bit because it takes time) ;)

Hi there!  So, I created a montage with Windows Movie Maker, I finished saving it on my computer and now I would like to upload my video to Facebook. However, the WMM format is not accepted, so I need to convert it. I read your responses, and you convert the video at the moment it is saved, but mine is already there :/ so what should I do? Hello, I might be late to respond, but maybe this will help some people who want to know... There is a program that converts videos into whatever you want. https://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/fr/index.html It's called Prism, it also works with .PDF documents, photos, and more. Try opening it with VLC. It's very rare that it doesn't recognize a video codec. If not, try converting your video with the Format Factory software.
