I would like to convert a rather large file (about 2 GB) from mkv to mp4 so that I can watch it

Just a quick question beforehand: what device will you be using to read it?
And why do you need to do "this conversion"?
MKV, MP4, AVI, or WMV and others are just container formats: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conteneur_vid%C3%A9o
Generally speaking, MKV or MP4 files often use the same codecs, so unless you really want to convert, you should just be able to change the MKV extension to MP4.
Use MediaInfo for example or the VLC player ( Tools --> Codec Information) to tell us what the streams/codecs of your file are.
Even though this renaming is sufficient in most cases, the "proper method" would be to use software in direct stream copy mode (without conversion) to perform this small operation. In any case, that's how I would personally do it...
