Hello, about a year ago we bought a Samsung DVD-SH893 recorder-burner; there’s no problem with recording, but everything goes haywire when it comes to burning a DVD meant to be played on a different brand’s player. I have contacted Samsung's customer service several times for help: each time, a new representative suggests a different DVD format (I might soon be able to open a shop) and every time the DVD ends up in the trash and I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown :-( is there anyone among you who could come to my rescue? That someone would have my eternal gratitude in advance :-)

Hello, I have had a Samsung recorder for a year. (It might be the same one, I haven't checked) and I just figured out how to use it!!! It’s true that the manual isn't very clear for beginners like us. When you record a show, instead of saving it on the hard drive (HD), save it directly to a DVD. And during playback, the dialog box will ask if you want to finalize the disc; respond yes, it may take a few minutes. And there you go, the disc can be read by other players. (Otherwise, only yours can read it.) I only understood this last week! You just have to test and experiment; it's like a computer, you have to explore on your own to use it better. I hope it works for yours. By the way, don’t forget to format it when you insert it, and there are also rewritable DVDs, but since I rarely do that, I haven’t bought any.

Oh yes François !! Technology is evolving, but not everything is designed to make our lives easier... I honestly miss my VCR for skipping commercials, stopping and resuming my reading another day at the same spot where I left off, and just by pressing ONE single button!!!

I thank you for taking the time to respond to me, but - unfortunately - I am not any further advanced :-( I have already read and reread the user manual attached to the device; I have used DVD+R, -R, +RW, -RW; I am strictly following the instructions and it always ends in failure. Thank you anyway for wanting to help me. Sincerely, Maryse.

If you want to copy a movie that is already on a DVD, unfortunately, that's not possible with your player. You need a computer with specific software. Yes, dear Madam, new DVD films, along with players, contain software and anti-copy data to fight against piracy. Although a court ruling prohibits the protection of DVD films, because the law allows private copying. http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-3233772-faire-une-copie-privee-d-un-dvd-protege

Dear Sir, my wish is not to copy DVD movies, but simply to be able to burn films or other programs that I have recorded during their broadcast on television. In fact, we bought this device to replace the VCR, which has not been working since we switched to digital, so that my elderly father can watch certain shows that air during the day or late at night.

Reader of another brand, which DVDs can it read? What formats? So you want to record movies, shows broadcast on television. If your player does not have a tuner, you need to leave your television on the relevant channel. It seems your player has an integrated TNT tuner and a 160 GB hard drive. You may need to update the player’s software; there is an update dated September 20, 2010: Firmware http://www.samsung.com/fr/consumer/tv-audio-video/dvd/hdd-dvd-recorder/DVD-SH893/XEF/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support You need to finalize the DVD -/+ R. There is a function that says: finalize the DVD. This is recorded in EZ according to your manual. Be careful, some players do not read all formats, your father's player may not read the formats of your player. Your manual seems to have been updated, read from page 51. http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200904/20090413161303781/01785A-SH893,5,7-XEF-FRA_0210.pdf There are less R and more R DVDs, single-layer and dual-layer DVDs, check which can be read on your father's player, see if your father's player reads the HDD. Yours seems to be able to read them all. It may be that your father's player does not read recorded formats that are compressed. On their Samsung website, there is an FAQ (frequently asked questions) http://www.samsung.com/fr/consumer/tv-audio-video/dvd/hdd-dvd-recorder/DVD-SH893/XEF/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support

Hello, I hope you received my message via Copains d'Avant messaging, otherwise you must think I am quite discourteous :-( Yesterday a friend came to my place to burn a DVD and then took it home to test it: successful test on a Samsung player and, surprisingly, successful test on a Philips player while my father's is also a Philips!! We’re probably going to swap players.... (the end justifies the means) In any case, I sincerely thank you for all the research you did to help me. Kind regards. Maryse

Hello, while reading the manual of your device, I wonder if you are forgetting to finalize your DVDs?

I tried the thing that Michèle gave, it seems to work but we can say goodbye to editing to start at the right place, getting rid of ads... it's really incredible such a design flaw.

I kept my previous player (Philips) which remembers the location of the titles being played whether it's on the DVD or on the hard drive.
