Printer works but outputs blank page!

Hello,
I have had a Brother DCP 375W printer for over a year.
It was working perfectly; scanning ok, copying ok, printing ok, network and connectivity with the computer ok.
The only issue is that I ran out of ink, and for 6 months (laziness when it gets to you!), I left the original cartridges inside. Yesterday, in order to save money, I bought new ones, specifically compatible ones.
There was no problem during installation; the "pirate" cartridges are perfectly accepted by the device.
I proceeded to a cleaning and a color quality test; the magenta, cyan, and yellow worked fine, but the black was not on the page.
I didn't really pay attention to it, went through a couple more cleanings, and launched a print job from my Mac. The printer received the data with no issues, it printed as well, but to my surprise, my page came out blank!
I tried several times, but nothing, just a blank printout.
Should I go through more cleaning, much more than once or twice?
Is it the ink from the previous cartridges left in there for so long that dried up and is preventing the rest from printing? (yes, but the printer indicates that everything is fine; if the "connection" between ink/machine is not working, it should indicate it, right?)
If that's the case, is auto-cleaning sufficient?
Or is there another solution?
Thank you in advance for your replies!
Configuration: Mac OS X / Firefox 6.0.2

Color photocopy: ok
Black photocopy: not working
Printing via Mac color: ok
Printing via Mac black: not working
I conclude that it is a problem with the black ink cartridge.
Ok
But the installed cartridge is new (I took it out of its sealed packaging), I have removed and reinserted it into the machine several times.
In this case, should I reinstall the cartridge again and again and perform cleanings until the black comes out? Or has the ink from the previous cartridge dried up, preventing the new one from working? Or could it possibly be a defective cartridge?
I had the same issue with an Epson SX218
I sent a message to the Epson technical center and they told me:
-do the nozzle cleaning twice in a row
-turn off the printer for 1 minute
-restart the printer
-do another nozzle cleaning
problem solved, I can print normally again
I don't use original cartridges and that's what caused this problem..
I hope I helped you
