Unexplained CPU overheating: Core i5 2500K

Hello,

I just bought a new setup:
cpu: Core i5 2500K
mobo: Asus P8P67LE
gpu: Asus GTX 560Ti
ram: 2x2GB DDR3 Gskill RipjawsX
psu: CX500 Corsair

The problem is that the CPU gets very hot and I don’t know why.

At startup, the BIOS reports a max temp rise of 87°, confirmed by SpeedFan when I’m back under Windows (7 Pro) at 85°.

I already changed the thermal paste on the cooler (twice, because I thought I hadn’t applied enough the first time, but it didn’t help). I’ve also made sure the fan is properly seated on the CPU, nothing wrong.

I know this CPU isn’t top-tier, but it’s unthinkable that it could be the cause of such a temperature rise.

I don’t know what to do, if you have any idea I’ll take it! This is really annoying, and I’m really fed up.

Thanks in advance!!

Configuration: Windows 7 / Safari 535.1

    hi ian

I know this cpu isn’t really great

lol..it’s a joke i hope , it is the best cpu today for gaming , you must have forgotten something in your manipulations either in the wiring or in the software installation because it doesn’t heat up at all this cpu , i have the same with a P8P67 rev B3

plus mine is overclocked to 4.5ghz ..lol

you spread the thermal paste well with a card over the entire surface of the heatsink, not in too thick a layer, a grain of rice and a half on the radiator .

what case do you have ?

do you price the latest bios of your motherboard ?

have you put your hand on the heatsink to see if it’s hot or not, because it could be the sensor, as it was said already, i think .

I made a writing mistake: I didn’t mean to say "I know this CPU isn’t top" but this cooler ^^
No problemo for the CPU, that’s why I got it :)

    Hello,

When you’re on Windows, do you only check the temperature via SpeedFan? Maybe an issue with reading the sensors, I’ve had that problem with this software.

Under Windows yes, I’ve only used SpeedFan, but I think it’s correct because the BIOS shows me the same temperature on startup.

Moreover, what put me on the scent is that under League of Legends, which supposedly doesn't demand many graphics resources, I had a “jump” or a kind of three-second freeze, something I never had with my old config, about every 20 seconds.

CPU automatically throttling to avoid overheating? that’s what I deduced initially.

Try PC Wizard or another software to make sure. I imagine you checked that the CPU fan is spinning? Have you tried a different thermal paste?

Hyuga, you might have the answer: pc wizard and hw monitor indicate a core temperature of around 45°C.
The fan is running fine, nothing to report. I used a different thermal paste the second time.

I wonder if SpeedFan is not displaying the temperature in °F, even though an F is shown next to the temperature...

However, what about the display in the BIOS? the bar is clearly in the red and indeed shows 85°...

And under League of Legends, after a while, the whole computer crashes, the screen freezes, impossible to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete...

Maybe a graphics problem then? despite everything the uncertainty remains regarding the CPU temperature..

Yes, the crash you have is still a mystery. Graphics card or processor...

Have you tried to stress your hardware a bit with OCCT?
What about the temperature of the graphics card?

So at first glance the heating issue seems resolved, I’m talking about the appearance. The BIOS shows 50 and pc wizard and hw monitor as well.
New thermal paste and presumably better clamping of the CPU onto the motherboard seem to have helped.

However, I’m still facing the following problem: after a few minutes of operation (about twenty), the PC crashes literally; the only possible action is to reset.
It crashes regardless of usage, in games or not.

I performed a few tests: it’s not the GPU (I swapped in my old one and the same happens) nor the Wi‑Fi card (without it it still does it).

I reinstated Windows 7 (original version), partitions are clean, nothing. I don’t know what to do anymore I’m very fed up, I don’t really see where it could come from.

The motherboard? but why would it crash after a time like that? Apart from the CPU which could overheat, I don’t really see anything. I’m taking any ideas.

Try a BIOS update, you never know—sometimes it fixes the problems.

Pass your memory test with MemTest software.

If not, the motherboard may have suffered from all these manipulations?

Hello everyone! My 2500K is in RMA for overheating!!! 90° in a few seconds!!! Weird because it only did that with another motherboard (Asus). Initially it was an (Intel) board, so motherboard?

Well no... because I put my CPU back on the Intel motherboard and same 90° ???
So is it the Asus that overheated it?
200€ for the CPU, I'm disgusted!!!

I'm waiting for Intel's warranty service
is it well covered under warranty?

The 2500k doesn’t get hot (except in a specific problem)…

I have exactly the same problem as Ian, except that my PC refuses to boot Windows. It shows between 90 and 100.c I don't know what to do :(
