Cannot read 8cm mini DVD on PC!

Hello everyone!

I just bought a Sony Handycam DCR DVD 105E and I purchased some mini DVD-RW 8cm to record my movies...

So far so good: I format it in video mode and when I finalize my mini DVD-RW to copy it to my computer it doesn't work!!! However, I'm on Windows XP and I can read the mini DVDs on my recorder or my Xbox console!

So what could the problem be? Is there a special connection to read these 8 cm DVDs???

Thanks to everyone for your responses because it's driving me a little bit crazy... ;-)

Hello,

I had the same issue and was advised to contact Sony…

Personally, I have the Sony 105 with DVD… and I was stuck… Here is Sony's response:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

Through your email, you would like information on video acquisition from your DVD Handycam DCR-DVD105E on a computer.

You can access the film directly from the DVD by inserting it into the computer’s DVD drive.

To do this, and to ensure compatibility with a commercial DVD, you just need to finalize the DVD in the camcorder.

This DVD will then have a structure identical to a Video DVD for use in the authoring software of your choice from the DVD drive of your computer.

Some computer or home DVD players may not read discs recorded in VR mode.

Before proceeding with recording in VR mode, check the compatibility of the DVD player.

For more details, please refer to the user manual provided with the player.

Your DVD player must also be compatible with reading -R/ -RW DVDs.

You can then use your usual software to play your video film from the DVD drive of your computer.

On Windows XP, you can also use the Windows Media Player 9 utility available at the site:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-windows-media-player-81718e0d-cfce-25b1-aee3-94596b658287

I am also pleased to inform you that there is a free software, FlaskMPEG, which allows you to convert the VOB files from a DVD into a compressed or uncompressed AVI video file.

Depending on the video codec selected in the software, the size of the resultant file varies significantly:

1 hour of film is compressed into 700 MB with the MPEG4 codec and 1 minute of film amounts to 2 GB in "uncompressed frames."

The resulting AVI file is then compatible with most commercial video editing software.

The FlaskMPEG software is available at the site:

http://flaskmpeg.sourceforge.net/?inc=downloads

Using FlaskMPEG on a DVD requires that the disc is recorded in Video Mode and finalized.

To make the best use of this software, we encourage you to consult the installation help on the site:

http://flaskmpeg.sourceforge.net/docs/readme_fr.html.

For your information, with the Pinnacle Studio 9 software and the 9.4.2 patch, you can also directly import a VOB file from a DVD.

Just insert the finalized 8cm DVD into the drive and then choose the section 'import DVD titles'.

The software then allows you to check the scenes to import for video editing.

Also, find below the contact information for the main video editing software publishers.

Well, my laptop was anyway too old for video, and with my new PC no more issues... Windows Media Player reads my finalized DVDs and with Pinnacle Studio I can edit them! You have to test because some players/burners are not compatible, but with recent ones it should be rare…

There is a patch for Pinnacle available for download on the Pinnacle site that allows working directly with the files from the DVD .mov, otherwise it is necessary to use the software recommended by Sony...

That's it

now it's up to you to have fun and be creative!

PS: Pinnacle is not very expensive compared to Photoshop…

Same problems as all of you with the SONY camcorder....

THE CULPRIT IS THE FINALIZATION IN VR MODE!!!!!

But everything is back to normal:

In my opinion, never record or finalize in VR format, the ONLY unknown to all our software or other players!!!!! I even went so far as to buy an additional DVD player that "was supposed" to read this format and it didn't work either!!!! Thanks SONY for this M____ format!!!

So to ensure everything goes smoothly, record and acquire in VIDEO format that all players (home or PC) can read and that all video editing software accepts.

If the problems persist, the only one I managed to free myself with is indeed PINNACLE STUDIO, even the VR format didn't resist! Go to the "import DVD titles" menu and select your mini DV, check the scenes you want to import, or even all at once. That's it!

Then save it in the format that suits you and do what you want with it.

As for me, I burn everything onto a DVD-RW and go to my Mac where I indulge in some amazing video editing with iMovie6 and iMovie08.

Good luck to everyone....

Hello,

yes, the solutions presented above are interesting for retrieving and storing your films in order to archive them and free up your potential DVD-RWs!

The solution that was sent to me by Sony and that I applied allows for recovering and storing these films but also for creating edits, and that was the point!

For Pynpyn: I also remind you that if your finalized disk is not detected by Windows or your player, it means that the latter is either not recent enough or not compatible...

As for me, with a recent player and Windows Media Player 11, I was able to read my films directly without much hassle. If they are readable, they can also be recorded on the PC's hard drive for backup....

Happy New Year to everyone

Hello,

I've had the same camcorder for a while now, and therefore the same issue...

After some research, it seems that the camcorder was not made for its DVDs to be read on a PC, but only on a home player.

The cause, if I've understood everything correctly, is the file format: I was told about VOB one time and ATRAC video + or something like that another time.

As a result, the DVD isn't even recognized by the PC's drive.

I was advised to find software that can decode this format (the DVD would then be recognized in the drive) and re-encode it to MPEG 2.

So that's it. The problem is, which software does that? I don't know how to proceed from here.

I hope this helps and that someone can provide the final piece of the solution...

Alexandre

Hi, having the same problem, the CD-RW 52x writer can't even open the mini DVD to see in what format the files are recorded.
Thank you

I have the same issue except that I can read them on my DVD player on my PC. My DVD player is a Samsung. I tried to read them on other players and I didn’t succeed, such as on HP, Philips, etc.

I have a SONY HANDYCAM digital camcorder and I couldn't read the mini DVs on my computer either. I referred to the finalization section in the camcorder's manual and now I can read the mini DVs on my computer without any problems.

Hi Alexandre

You put your 8 cm DVD into your PC drive, go to start then to My Computer, click on your drive where your DVD is located, the "video ts" symbol appears, you right-click, select "open", a bunch of symbols installs, you click on video ts "IFO file".

Hello again,

don't hesitate to contact Sony's customer service... I've had enough! I reached out to them late in the morning... early afternoon: a clear, concise, and complete response in my inbox...

Apparently, it should be doable without too much hassle, provided you have the right software...

See you!

Hello,

I took a look at the manual for this camcorder since it is available in its entirety on Sony's French website.

It seems that these DVDs can be played on a PC, even though the possibility of incompatibility with certain players is mentioned.

First thing, can you check the content of the mini DVD with Windows Explorer?

I still find it amazing that you can't retrieve the directory containing the videos to your hard drive for editing!

Not having to use a Firewire port must be one of the main attractions of these 8cm DVDs...

Hello,

Can you give us the brand and model of your PC's burner/reader?

When you try to view the contents of the mini-DVD with Windows Explorer, what happens?

Good evening,

I have a Sony DVD 105 and I've encountered the same problem as all of you.
I spent a good part of the afternoon on it, but it was worth it because I found a "temporary" solution that finally allows me to recover the VR format movies I burned on my small 8 cm discs.

I'm sharing this with you because I must have installed I don't know how many software programs before finding a solution; even the advice from Mr. Sony mentioned above didn't really help me.

So the software that works is "Ulead DVD MovieFactory," downloadable at the following address on www.telecharger.com:
or more precisely
https://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/edition_video/fiches/18260.html

Once installed (be careful, it’s a trial version), you can import your movies, which will be downloaded by default to:
C:\Documents and Settings\XXXX\My Documents\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\5.0

Happy holidays to everyone!

Best regards.
Xavier The Chap.

Well! We have indeed followed the obstacle course, bought a compatible VOB reader/burner, installed Power DVD (=> it works, we can view the finalized rushes knowing that we can unfinalize to continue filming on the DVD), bought Pinnacle 9 on eBay, downloaded the patch .4, imported the rushes, but.... (oh yes, there's always a "but") there is no sound under Pinnacle!!!!!
Have you encountered this problem?

Hello,

I'm sorry, but I don't have any sound issues on my end... I do have one difference though: I haven't taken the time to download the Pinnacle patch. So I'm converting my files using the free software suggested by Sony before importing them into Pinnacle for editing... maybe that's the issue?

Otherwise, you might want to try reinstalling everything...

I don't have any more information, sorry.

Hello, I have read all your conversation and unfortunately, even by downloading software etc., nothing works, I still have the same problem as you. I went to the seller of my Canon camcorder and bought a DAZZLE, and it works; I can now read my mini DVDs directly from my camcorder to my PC and thus save them on my hard drive or onto a DVD. Good luck to everyone.

Good evening, I followed the entire conversation carefully since I also have the same problem: solved since 1 hour ago:

download FAIRUSE WIZARD 2 then download KLITE CODEC.
It works.

No problem on my end, I finalize and resume with Nero Vision and I edit, cut, etc., and put it on a 4.7 GB DVD, my 4 cm 8 DVDs from Sony DCR DVD92E.

Sorry, I read your message well but I'm a beginner in computers. Can you tell me how you put your DVDs on the computer and how you transfer them to larger DVDs? I can only read them.
Thank you in advance.

Il faut finaliser (si vous voulez lire vos films sur l'ordi ou autres lecteurs) copier-coller les vidéos dans l'ordinateur, définaliser avec le camescope et seulement formater avec le camescope.

I have formatted and finalized the video with the camcorder, the video works on the camera. The problem is when trying to transfer the videos to the PC.

The LG CD-RW drive is searching but finds no files, as if the mini DVD were empty.
Thank you for any help

Hello,
I just read the entire discussion attentively... reassuring if we can say so!!! We all have pretty much the same problems. To play the DVD on the finalized or non-finalized PC, I downloaded Media Player Classic (free) from 01 net!
There it works directly from the DVD drive of the PC and even from the movie that I transferred to the hard drive of the PC!
As for the rest, editing and others... I will follow some advice.. because as it stands, the movies are unworkable with all the editing software.
As for the home player, it takes it and plays it... but it's probably a stroke of luck because on other players it's almost impossible.
If this information can help move things along....
See you later!

Thank you for the advice, but I can't get my mini DV onto the hard drive, and I can't copy it onto a DVD. However, I can read it on the computer with Nero: how can I burn it... Thank you in advance.

I forgot "Once you've @ opened your 8 cm DVD in the PC drive, you'll see the VIDEO_TS folder; right-click and select copy, then paste it on your desktop."
