Good evening,
I was a victim of armed robbery.... they stole a laptop, a DELL INSPIRON 1764 which has the S/N =79CSYL1 along with a 3G key. I filed a complaint with the police and requested the location of the laptop, and I went through all the procedures at the court to get permission from the Ministry of Justice (which was very expensive for me), but unfortunately my service provider informed me that they do not provide location services for laptops or 3G keys, it is only for lost or stolen mobile phones and SIM cards.
My question is whether there is a company or another procedure to follow to recover my laptop which is under warranty via the serial number?
Does the warranty cover me in case of theft?
Thank you in advance
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 4.0.1

TeamViewer must be open for you to access the other PC! Additionally, the password changes every time you open it =)
However, the first thing thieves do is reformat the computer. The only thing you can do is report the theft to the police, ideally providing them with the technical information at your disposal (serial number, MAC address).
Finally, check your various insurances (credit card used for the purchase, bank, warranty extension listed on the invoice, etc.) to see if there is any coverage for theft. In any case, the insurance will require the police report, and it is only by reporting the stolen property to the police that they could return it in the event of a miraculous recovery.

Hello, I contacted the TeamViewer Support and this was the response
In this kind of situation, we would need an official police document requesting the necessary information for the investigation.
This document must be sent to the following address privacy@teamviewer.com
We remain at your entire disposal for any further information.
Sincerely
* the police here (Morocco) can't even write to provide official documents, I'm in deep trouble..........

You would need to know a hacker to track the MAC address of your phone; network cards all have a physical address specific to the card. With the serial number of your phone, the manufacturer should be able to provide you with this address assigned to the network card, the address of both the Ethernet and Wi-Fi cards. If, however, he is using the laptop with a 3G dongle, then that's pointless.
Sorry for you, but I think it's going to be difficult...

Thank you for your response. In fact, I contacted the manufacturer DELL and explained my situation to them, stating that the computer is under warranty. They told me that all they can do for me is to report the theft of my computer. Regarding the hacker, I would like to know if it was a tracking company, and I am willing to pay. Otherwise, where can I find a real hacker?
Thank you, friends.
Thank you, friends.
unless the thief gets caught and you are invited to the post-search retrieval... that's a bit of fiction, it happens in "exclusive investigations"...
For your next PC, you could install a little hidden software; if it connects before being formatted after being stolen, there will be a way to recover its location, at least the IP it is using.

Thank you, but on the computer in question, I had TeamViewer installed. The ID was: 429 155 912 and the password was 4638 or 1988, but I can't access it
and the thieves have no knowledge of computers; they probably sold it to someone, and it's been three months since the police have been investigating the assailants, but nothing so far.

Thank you, druid, for your interest in my subject. Indeed, I thought about this. I was robbed/attacked on 02/12/2011, and as if by coincidence, 5 days later there was an ad on the internet for the sale of a Dell 1764. What’s strange is that the seller lives in the same city as I do, and all Dell Inspiron 1764s have a capacity of 500 GB. I divided mine into 2 parts: 400 GB for Windows and a second partition (100 GB) which I kept hidden for Linux.
I contacted the guy, and he told me that he imported it from Germany... blah blah blah.

This afternoon, I was at the police station to request an official document (for the TEAM Viewer company), but unfortunately, they didn’t understand anything about this whole TEAM Viewer story, software, location, and they asked me to come back tomorrow morning.

Hello, I was well received by the police; the commissioner himself listened to me attentively and provided me with a theft declaration certificate signed and hidden (handwritten certificate) in the form of a form on my part. I sent all the necessary documents to TEAM VIEWER (the theft declaration, purchase invoice for the computer, even a medical certificate) ......... my request was rejected by the company because the fax number and phone number are missing (and that's the case with the police station here, they don't even have a computer) ........... well, I'm in deep trouble
on the other hand, the guy from the ad sold the computer
I'm really lost; I don't know what to do to get my computer back.

Hello
I want to disable my computer and I don't know which Dell service or company I should contact??
Knowing that all computers have a technology (in the BIOS, the Anti-Theft technology) that allows remote deactivation in case of theft (Dell Inspiron 1764)
For those who are not familiar with this technology, here's the link for more info

Good luck,
As for me, two laptops were stolen during a burglary in Paris (my son's and mine)
By a means I won't disclose here, I tracked them down online (IP address).
The first one is in Algeria eight days later. The French police tell me they can't do anything there.
The second one is in the northern suburbs of Paris. I reported the IP to the police, but they are not doing anything. I wrote to President Nicolas who kindly replied that he was forwarding my message, then the relevant service told me to contact a lawyer or a victims' association.
Conclusion: don't waste your money installing tracking and paying annual fees. The police have other fish to fry, sorry, I mean "have forms to fill out" to complete their dormant archives.
The only solution is to get theft insurance, but like me, you'll be reimbursed a quarter of the value because your laptop is more than two years old.
And don't forget to back up your data, it has been very helpful to me.
Poor France!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Claude, I'm really sorry for you, it's really sad to hear that. As for the location, I contacted the police prefect (high official) directly, who welcomed me well and listened to me. Then he gave instructions to the competent police, and right away I was taken with the police to the district court to sign a location authorization from the king's prosecutor. After signing, I had the chance to go with the cops to an agency ***** ISP, and I was surprised that the agency does not have the means to locate a laptop or 3G key; they can only locate mobile phones. But I haven't lost hope. I worked hard to buy it, and I will continue my investigations until I find it.
Hello Wolf,
I read "prosecutor of the king," so it's not, like me, in France (Nico is not a king, though... lol).
I don't know what you mean by "can't locate." It’s true that with just the MAC number of the network card, there’s no way to locate.
But if, like me, you have a trojan that sends you the IP number and the time, then all ISPs in the world can refer to their connection logs, which gives them their client, and thus they have the postal address, because even with a 3G key, they issue invoices.
As for me, I have not only the IP address but also the municipality (Aubervilliers in 93), the name (....), and the first name (Bbey) of the person using my stolen computer, but not the address. What to do, since I don’t know any police prefects?
Be like me, Wolf, be persistent, and let’s keep each other informed of what we manage to do................ Claude.

Suite for krazykat (and others)
I know that the police in Aubervilliers and elsewhere do not respond to this and I MAKE IT KNOWN LOUD AND CLEAR.
Regarding cybercrime specialists, here is my case:
1/ I do not reveal all my secrets, that would only help computer thieves. You might say that I could tell the police; not at all. In a complaint filing, the police write everything down (or at least whatever they want), and in particular, they do not hesitate to ask you for and transcribe the code for the digicode of your building (I have the proof). Thus, the opponent has what they need to come and do.....whatever you can imagine.
2/ During my two complaints, in the 83 and the 75, I came across people who had at least a vague idea of what an IP address is, or at least they knew that it corresponded at a certain point to an internet subscription account. I remain evasive about how I obtained my information. They do not need to know exactly how I pinpointed them, just the minimum so that they know I obtained the IP address legally, and that was enough for them. I even offered to do a demonstration for them if they had an internet connection, which they refused (of course), under the pretext of security for their installations (it’s a good laugh).
I also do not have a high opinion of the police, although there are some very decent ones out there. They are under so much pressure and come into contact with so many criminals that they easily develop a bias, especially against young people.
With my age, when there is a traffic stop, it's never me that they signal to. If you are a young guy driving, avoid flashy cars and have a pretty girl by your side as often as possible, it makes relations with the police easier.

Hello Claude
Since you know a lot about the technical information on your computer, especially where it is located, I advise you not to give up while waiting for the police to find your computer.
I don't know the judicial procedures where you are, but try to discuss this with a senior official. When I was working with SFR, we had certain tools that allowed the localization of mobile devices, tracking of numbers, the IMEI of the mobile, in short, all the technical information.
And I am sure that if you push your case forward, the police will find a solution for you, and it is your right.
Best regards.

Good evening,
There were ways before it was stolen from you like this for example, but we are not always aware of everything. I hope the battery was almost empty and that they don't have a charger identical to yours:

Doesn't exist in any phone directory.
No directory for their vocational high school
But this person exists on Facebook without any details on their profile.
My little Kebin76110, you know that if I've already discovered a lot of information it's because I'm not born yesterday.
As said in an ad "one day: I'll have it...."

Hello kevin75110,
Excellent idea, but ..................................... I live 1,000 km away from there.
Moreover, my wife worked for a long time at the town hall (including as the secretary of the mayor) and I can tell you that the instructions are to never give out someone else's address. So, if you want to pass on a message to someone and the employee is accommodating, she will tell you to give her your message and that she will pass it on to the person, and it is that person who will decide whether to contact you if they wish.
Well, let's say I go to Aubervilliers to investigate; I might be taking a big risk questioning people in those housing estates.
Cheers ....... Claude

Even as a young athlete with a hoodie, you wouldn't be from the neighborhood ^^
The police in Aubervilliers won't show up for a stolen phone, that's for sure.
Have you inquired whether the police service where you filed your complaint had a specialized cybercrime investigator? You would at least have the hope that someone understands how you managed to spot them (well, yes, I don't have a good opinion of the police^^).

Thank you for your encouragements, wolf-securite,
Not only do I have precise technical information, but I also have information that seems to be the name and surname of the person who is using my stolen computer, as well as the high school where they study.
It is therefore very easy for the police to find my computer, but they are not doing it.
I don't know any high-ranking officials. I have indeed written to our President of the Republic (who loves to take care of each French citizen), but without success. So if anyone has any power... I would gladly welcome it.
You might tell me that I need to go there in person, but I live 1,000 km away and it would be easy to get into trouble in this "Chicago" of the northern suburbs of Paris.
But I am not losing hope; there will surely be a day when a good lead will trigger the action allowing not only to recover my computer but also to catch the burglars and the resale network.
On your side, be as tenacious as I am.
Best regards .............. Claude

I'm fed up with running after you, fed up with contacting the police to see if there are any updates, fed up with contacting my supplier for the location
One day you will surely need a driver and you will probably look for drivers for your Dell and you will enter the serial number on the Dell site to get all the drivers S/N =79CSYL1
Know well that I was almost killed because I resisted the thieves who seriously injured me on the head with a sword and I had to undergo surgery
The computer you bought cost me 6 months of work and headaches in a call center
Return my laptop or show me who sold it to you
Thank you
