I bought a stolen Mac, what should I do? Solved

Hello,
so here it is, I don’t know who to turn to for solutions to a huge problem. I have to admit I’m a bit ashamed to talk about it.
I bought a Macbook Pro a week ago from a temp who was working with me at night. I should mention that I’m a student during the day. We always talked a lot and I once told him about my out-of-warranty PC issue. Since I couldn’t afford to buy a new one, he offered to sell me his. I emptied my savings, and asked my bank for an authorized overdraft of 500 euros. In total, I paid 900 euros. In cash.
I can’t reach this person anymore, he’s not coming to work and isn’t answering his phone.
A friend told me the laptop might be stolen. It can barely connect to the internet from McDonald's. Undercover pages frequently pop up.
I’m almost in tears. Okay, okay, I am crying. I’m disgusted. What should I do?

What is the proof that this is a stolen computer? Its serial number and the search database for stolen Macs could prove it. I don't have the link in mind, but maybe here: http://www.macbook-fr.com/annonces/machines_volees_article79.html

But as Sarahmoon says, you don't buy a second-hand computer without taking as many useful precautions as possible, or else you risk being accused of receiving stolen goods and facing a potentially heavy sentence.

Did you think to ask him for an invoice to see??? Don't you check before making this kind of purchase? I bought a second-hand one that was 6 months old, paid 1000 euros and it's top-notch.
Always always ask for the invoice. Maybe contact the temp agency that has his details, explain the problem, and file a complaint. But anyway...

Hello, I want to clarify that I am a student during the day.  No comments please. Regarding your problem, you should know that under the law you are considered a receiver. So the best thing to do would be to file a complaint along with all the troubles that will ensue. Good luck.

I just read this exchange; here's my opinion: there is no good solution for keeping a stolen product, it's unnecessarily dangerous; as you're studying law, you know that possession of stolen goods can cost much more than the price of this second-hand Mac, it's not worth it... The best solution is to contact Apple France to see if it has really been reported stolen, and if so, to return it amicably to its original owner... That's the only way to get out of this problem. It has the advantage of giving you a small chance of knowing if the Mac is indeed stolen, and if not, you can keep it and have it repaired by the after-sales service. If it is stolen, having it at home is a much too great risk to take. Possession of stolen goods (whether real or constructive) is very severely punished in France, the game is not worth the candle! A few years ago, as a professional photographer, I took photos with a very beautiful amateur model, but who was a drug addict, and during a nighttime visit, he stole part of my professional photo equipment (worth 20,000 euros when new). I was really upset because it was my working tool, and I was stuck without it. So, I made a detailed theft report to the police (not really a choice), and 10 days later, they returned all the equipment intact (except for the removed batteries) which had been directly seized from a Parisian receiver. The receiver got 5 years in prison, and my little drug-addict model, since he must have acted as an informant to the police, got away with a treatment order... I don't hold it against him, he was just a lost young guy caught in the heroin trap, but I didn't know that beforehand, and not being in that world, I didn't even notice when I first met him... But this misadventure taught me to be more careful with the people I brought home, and it gave the little guy a chance to receive care for detoxification... Moreover, his photos sold very well because he was really beautiful! All this to say that what sometimes seems like a difficult choice or a matter of conscience always ends up being beneficial or wholesome if we are honest with ourselves and others, because the straightest path is always the best...
