Hello everyone!
I'm going to try to stay calm and clear-headed, but it's going to be tough! My computer has always worked very well. I'm particularly careful with it and I don't do any peer-to-peer sharing. I have a bunch of anti-malware software on my PC and I maintain it every day.
Ten minutes ago, I plugged my USB drive into a front USB port on the tower. Problem! The port is broken. (I don't really know how to explain it...) I put my USB in the port because LIKE AN IDIOT! I didn't look at the hole before plugging in the USB!!!!!!!!!!
And then Boom, short circuit, the computer shuts off all of a sudden!
I'm trying to turn it back on, but nothing happens when I press the button.
So, do you think my computer is:
-Done for...
-Needs to be reformatted (this would reassure me (There’s nothing important on the computer except games, so...))
-Needs to be taken to a repair shop but will still have to be reformatted.
-Will work just fine tomorrow morning ^^...
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Since I think I’ll be spending the night waiting for your answers, I can provide you with any necessary details...
P.S.: The computer is also (unfortunately) used by my brothers... What a bummer.

PC that won't turn on - lost data?
Personal experience in similar conditions with an Asus F3SC laptop.
1- Last night, I wanted to watch a movie with good sound conditions,
2- I tried to connect the jack plug of my external speakers,
3- I "moved" the plug in front of the connectors on the front panel,
4- a USB connector is close to the jack connector...
5- and suddenly, total shutdown of the laptop!
6- gasp! gulp! hell and damnation! etc., and after countless attempts, unable to restart the laptop. Absolute darkness!
7- headed to another laptop and searched the net...
8- the first information urged me to immediately remove the battery and hold the power button for a few seconds (?)
9- I discovered this discussion on CCM. Stress, hope, but also clarity, the worst is always possible...
and 10 of der- this morning, reinserted the battery, pressed the power button...and everything restarted perfectly!!!
Given my experience and the discussions I read on the subject:
- do not connect anything blindly
- make connections yourself, do not trust this task to someone who does not know your laptop
- only connect equipment and cables in good condition
- regularly back up important documents
- consider the quality of potential protections of the machine against this kind of "accident" when purchasing the laptop. Some laptops are more expensive than others, of course, but everything seems to have a price, in computing as elsewhere...
hoping that for those who read me, the misadventure ends the same way!

cut the power of the PC..
turn on your PC (power still off!!) which allows dissipating the residual voltage..
then
plug your power back in..
restart your PC
=> if nothing happens.. it's likely that the power supply has blown.. => protection system to prevent all peripherals from blowing out in cascade with it.
in this case, tomorrow, buy a 300w power supply, at most you'll spend 45 euros.
however, if the problem doesn't come from the power supply => ideally, test with another power supply if you have a second PC, take your PC to a dealer for a complete test of the components that have blown or not..
however, formatting will not solve the problem at all.. as you indicated the short circuit.. has nothing to do with the data on the HDD...
I'm not going to spend the night by your side.. but I'm still staying a few minutes.. just in case

same problem hihihi and everything ended well I had plugged the jack of my speakers into my mom's computer USB port and bam everything went black...
hi,
if no lights come on when you press the Power button and no fan is running, well, I think you've hit the jackpot!
Still, try unplugging it for a minute, then plug it back in and try to start it again.
If nothing happens, it's game over! Either the motherboard has fried or a fuse, sometimes it's also the power supply fuse???

Good evening to you, 10 minutes ago I was watching a movie on my smart TV with an HDMI cable connected to my GPU
only when removing it the cover on the male port came off (http://www.noelshack.com/2014-44-1414861160-20141101-174620-1.jpg
) it was dark and while fiddling my computer suddenly shut down
I tried to turn it back on but it didn't respond, but after unplugging and replugging the cables, the LEDs lit up briefly and then it shut down again
I don't know what to do, did I break the power supply? In any case, there's no smell coming from the PC
Did the fuse overheat and is it in safety mode?
Thanks in advance!

Hi! I have the exact same problem with an Acer Travelmate 4101WLMI, but it's because of the connection of the laptop screen; the plug created a damn short circuit that completely rendered my laptop unusable. I'll give it a try.
Hello, I accidentally plugged my earbuds into the USB port (it was dark, I couldn't see anything :p) which directly caused my computer to shut down completely. I panicked and thought I was going to have to buy a new computer or that my motherboard had fried. I searched through a lot of posts, and when I arrived at this one, I found the answer I was looking for. After two days of trying to turn it back on in vain, removing/replacing my motherboard, I did what was suggested in this post:
- Remove my battery
- Press the power button for about thirty seconds
- Release the same button
- Put the battery back in
Then my computer turned back on! Honestly, I didn’t think such a simple operation could fix this short circuit!
Thanks to you, PhilMGN

I also have a short circuit problem; my computer crashed when I tried to install a non-pirated software. When I tried to turn it off, it didn’t work, so like an idiot, I removed the battery, and now nothing works. I waited for several hours, tried again with the battery, without the battery, with the power supply, and nothing. I don’t know what might have blown, and I don’t know how much it’s going to cost me. I am a student, and I just bought the computer second-hand.
Hello
I have an HP Compaq nx9500 laptop
Here’s my problem, my son probably for fun
while talking on the phone with a friend put a piece
of aluminum foil in the USB port of the laptop and the laptop
turned off, he turned it back on and did the same thing again, of course
I told him not to do that or he would break it, and yes now
it won't start anymore, nothing at all not even the fans. Well, I’m pretty good with this stuff but I doubt it has a short circuit,
I removed the battery pack, I plugged in the power supply, a small light in front turned on but went off right away, and when I put the battery pack in it doesn't turn on at all. But where and how can I see how to open this laptop?
It’s not obvious, I’ve unscrewed all the screws underneath and inside and I couldn’t manage to open it.
Can someone help me please
Your help would be appreciated, thank you.

Phew, that was close!
I accidentally short-circuited my USB port, and only all the USB ports stopped working (the little red LED turned off and there was no sound), but once I unplugged the faulty port (in complete panic), all my USB ports instantly turned back on!
Nothing much happened on the PC, no crashes or anything. I really got lucky, didn’t I?

The problem is not with your motherboard but with your front USB ports.
You just need to unplug the front USB from your motherboard.
If Windows has a problem,
you will have to format the disk and reinstall Windows.

Thank you Noob linux!
Phew!
I hug you on behalf of the whole family!
P.S: If by any chance you play GUILD-Wars and you're short on money... no problem! ^^

I tried to install a WiFi bridge on my Samsung laptop, it caused a short circuit, and the PC won't start anymore for an hour, I'm going to follow your advice and let it rest for a while............... maybe it will work............
Merci PhilMGN, tu viens de me sauver la vie. J'ai moi aussi mis malencontreusement la prise jack de mon casque dans un port USB proche et j'ai cru avoir grillé mon ordi, mais par chance, tu étais là. Merci vraiment !!!!!!!!
Thank you PhilMGN, you just saved my life. I also accidentally plugged my headphone jack into a nearby USB port and I thought I had fried my computer, but you were there, thank you!!!!!!!!!! ☺
;)
Have a good night... peaceful :)
I don't play much anymore... except Quake 3, loyal for eternity :))

My Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 had charging issues. A friend told me it might be due to dust in the charging port. He advised me to remove it with a straightened paperclip (ouch! bad idea, but I didn't know it yet). I did it, the paperclip touched the wall, sparked, then nothing. I panicked, searched for a tutorial on my PC (which had nothing), and stumbled upon this one. I thought the tablet and PC operated on the same principle, so I opened my tablet, removed the battery, pressed the power button for 30 seconds, put the battery back, and replaced the cover. I pressed the power button briefly: nothing. I pressed for longer...
ALLELUJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! It works again! Thank youthank youthank you!!!

I just removed the battery, it just happened to me half an hour ago!
The same thing just happened to me as well, I was on the verge of breaking it in two! Hysteria!
Could you tell me if all your files were preserved?
Thank God!
Thank you so much for your answers, participation, and your support, fellow cybernauts!
This happened last night. I left it unplugged for a while.
This morning I looked on the forums and I:
1. Removed the battery
2. Pressed the power button for a few seconds (about 10)
3. Reinserted the battery
4. DO NOT PLUG IT INTO THE WALL
5. Turned it on
6. And there you go, it’s working again and even with my configuration (not factory reset)
:)
The solution was the same.
THANK YOU!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
