Hello, I'm encountering the following problem: When I click on my money account file, it says it cannot find or open the file.
This message is the same when I try to open it with my backup CD.
I don't know if there's a connection, but this problem started after I did an archiving, and even when I try to open that archive, I get the same message.
If someone can help me, that would be great.
Thank you.

Phew, I had the same problem but it has just been resolved! I followed Microsoft's procedure: https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/help/890393 and fabulous, the update is happening and I finally regained access to my money files (what a scare)!
Thanks to everyone!
Thanks to everyone!
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. The repair utility does not work on this file (although the log tells me that no data is corrupted), neither do the updates, nor does opening it under another administrator (I don't have the "run as administrator" option because it probably doesn't exist in XP).
Only the demo version of Money Recovery seems to have an effect, but it costs €149 to acquire the full version. Database recovery utilities also yield good results (but I only recover the databases and not my Money file).
In short, I still have the message "Microsoft Money has detected that the file xxx was not closed" and sometimes "your file is read-only or is not a Money file."
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks a million in advance.

I conducted tests with Money Recovery online, which indicated that a free repair was possible. However, it didn't yield any results. But upon writing to Money Recovery, they graciously corrected my file for me: they were really great, even though it was a bit laborious, and I was able to recover my 10 years of data (I now do regular backups on a USB drive).
I am in the same situation; I understand that the Money I am reinstalling today has fewer updates than the same Money I installed six months ago.
But apparently, it only updates the stock prices; I don't see it updating the software.
So, I have this same message all the time except when I restore a backup from five months ago, then it works...
It's annoying, and I don't see how to get out of this.
I will try to find a version of Money 2006.
I would appreciate any solution.
Thanks in advance.
Didier

Hello and thanks to Pierrot for this official response.. which I will keep safe just in case...
Since then, I've managed to resolve my issue from 12/15.. after various "hazardous" manipulations.. and without understanding the source of my success... which explains the publication on the site
However.. for all practical purposes.. if this can help the community
- recovery of an old money file used before the updated version
- under an internet connection, in the money menu bar, activate the ? which offers "about money" then "internet service terms" at the bottom of the page link provided http/support.microsoft.com
- activating this link, visiting several pages including money problem resolution
- after about 2 to 3 minutes !!!! suggestion to proceed with updating the money version....
- after this step... opening recent files then becomes possible..
Good luck to those who will use "this workaround ???? "

Hello
Facing the same issue after installing the initial version of Money 2005 on a new PC:
- unable to recover the files xx.mny or xx.sbf backed up with the Money 2005 version that was updated...
- the failure of the solution proposed by another member =
start/run msnoney.exe -s... MESSAGE "windows cannot find the file..."
In the end.. have you found a solution to reactivate your old files??? Thank you for your response
Do you think that using a Money 2006 version... could be a solution????

Hello,
following a reformatting, I am also unable to reuse my money file. The error message is as follows: "Microsoft Money cannot open this file because it was created by an incompatible version." But in English.
Apparently, this is due to the fact that the version I used was a localized version of the Money software.
But I no longer have this software.
In trying to install another version, I receive this error message. I have several years of accounting in there!
I tried installing older versions of Money (2001 and 2002) but it asks me for a password upon opening, even though the file has never been protected.
I even used a password recovery software specific to Money, which confirms that no password protects my file.
Is it not possible to determine from my Money file which version of Money it was created with?
That way, by finding that version, I might be able to reopen the file and make a clean export compatible with Money 2007, for example...
Or open the money.mny file with another compatible software?...
Thank you for your help!

Here it is, after spending a lot of time trying to find a solution, I have finally resolved the problem!
So I will reveal how I bypassed the administrator problem not recognized by Microsoft Money following the upgrade to Windows Vista!
1°) Create a new administrator account
- Start
- Control Panel
- User Accounts
- Manage another account
- Create another account
- Specify an administrator name: I called it "Admin" (I couldn't name it "Administrator", Vista refused since it already existed, but I can't see it!)
- Check Administrator
The Admin account is created.
2°) Change user
- Start
- Go to Change user and select Administrator
Let Vista complete the desktop creation operations
3°) Open Money
- Start
- Search for the Money file you installed
- Open it
4°) Open the "Sample" file, the conversion happens automatically
- Let yourself be guided by the update that takes place in a few seconds
- Go find your backup file or the file you need to use, the conversion will happen automatically.
5°) It's party time at home (or at the office)!
6°) Change user again to return to the one you usually use
- Delete the Admin account you created
7°) Finally, I can work on my Money!
Sincerely,
Celtarion

Good evening CEltarion,
I just switched to Vista on a new PC and nothing works!
Your method, like others, doesn't work. I can install Money 2005, but that's it. I don't have any updates available, and of course, it can't read my latest file because it's too recent for the base version...
Do you have any other ideas?
Sincerely
You can reach me at blt54@wanadoo.fr

I changed computers. I installed MSMONEY 2005 and I'm desperately trying to open my old file created on XP. I think it's a compatibility issue with VISTA on the new computer.
Even trying your method, I keep getting the same message: "Unable to find the Money.mny file or open it because it is probably a read-only file, or you do not have permission to modify it, or your drive is write-protected."
Thanks anyway for your tip.

Good evening Celtarion,
I wanted to thank you for your explanation!! I had been struggling for several days to read my Money files modified in early 2008 after buying a computer equipped with Vista (whereas my old one had Windows XP). I couldn't manage to do it until now...
The solution to create a second user account is clever! But be careful, once "logged" under the administrator account, make sure to open Money by right-clicking the Money icon: Open as administrator: this is the only solution for it to spontaneously propose the update. At least for my case.
This worked perfectly on my machine and resolved my issue while I had been hitting a wall until now, all the other described solutions not working! I hope your explanation can help other new Vista users because I have a feeling I am not the last one to waste significant time on this problem...
Thanks again for this solution and especially for sharing it!

Hello,
Thank you very much for all this information.
I have a new PC with Windows 7 and like everyone else, I want to use Money while keeping my backup file.
I right-clicked on the Money icon: "Run as administrator" and the update happened in just a moment. I was able to open my Money file that I've been using since 1996!
Thank you all for sharing information.

Hello,
This trick can help you:
Can't open my Money 2005 file (14.0.80.2107) on my second PC where I installed the same version (I love Money!!!)
I simply used the "File" menu, "Repair a Money file," "Standard option," and there it is, it opens on my second PC (Good luck to all, you'll need it with this product).

Hello,
There is a problem with the Money2005 versions. Have you done an update? Have you used your file with another version or another program?
You need to be careful: the demo version is newer than most of the versions given on CD, so if you created a file with the demo version and then install the full version, the file won't work...
I don't know if this helps... keep us posted :)

Hello,
My problem is as follows:
I installed Money 2006 on my desktop PC. It works perfectly.
I copied my files to a USB stick (Copy of the original file and a backup file)
Subsequently, I installed Money 2006 on my laptop and tried to open the files.
The error message is always the same: " Cannot find the Money.mny file or open it as it is probably a read-only file, or you do not have permission to modify it, or your drive is write-protected. If you have selected the correct file and cannot access it, you must click OK and open your most recent backup file. If this file is currently in use by another application, close it in that application, then click OK to retry. "
I did not create a passport.net account. I tried updating Money but with no result.
I attempted to uncheck the Read-only option on the backup file, still with no result.
I do not have a more recent backup file other than the one on the USB stick
I browsed the forum without success
I used the same password that allows me to access my accounts but once again, without success...
In short, it's a hassle. I am unable to work on Money when I am on the go.
Does anyone have any ideas? A solution?
Thanks in advance.

My latest attempts:
I created a Test account that works perfectly.
Then I created a passport.net account and updated Money 2006.
Then I closed everything, shook it well, and reopened Money. Then I asked it to open my original file, I entered my access code and there...
No result, same message as before...
I’m losing hope :-(

After the update, don't forget to restart money... It's a simple thing, but I didn't do it and I spent 30 minutes trying to find another solution, thinking it still wasn't working...
Hi, actually, if the update doesn't happen with the command typed in CMD, create a test file that will allow Money to open and update automatically,

"Under Vista, to ensure that the update (which takes several minutes) completes, it's not enough to have administrative rights; you MUST open Money with a right-click and select the 'Run as administrator' option: that's how I finally managed to get Money updated!

Hi
I've tried, but I can't update
It downloads correctly and at the moment of installation it shows a message like "check your connection and make sure you have at least 100 MB on the 'hard drive'"
What a hassle
Thanks to anyone who has the answer

After formatting the hard drive, I couldn't open Money 2005. I followed your update procedure and the miracle happened. Thank you for the valuable tip.
