EPSON SX115 scanner comb blocked

Solved

Hello,

I have a big problem since today with my Epson SX115 printer/scanner:
I wanted to scan a document. When I turned the device on, I heard the sound of the cartridge carriage, okay. Then, after those sounds, I heard: clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick!
I realized that the scanner's carriage (the thing that shines light and captures the image) was stuck on the right. In fact, this carriage is attached to a belt, and this belt is fixed on the right to a toothed pulley, and on the left, driven by a pinion (+gear and motor). What caused this noise was the fact that the belt, stuck by the carriage hitting the limit, was causing the pinion to slip.
Following this, the orange "page" and "ink" lights start blinking...
I tried restarting several times, same thing.

Have you ever had this problem?

    Hello,

I encountered the same problem as all of you regarding the comb that hits the stop and causes the belt notches to jump with a clicking sound.

I want to contribute since the manipulation I performed worked

It seems that the stop detection is optical. If you look closely under the tile, you'll notice a white strip with a black square right in the middle. It's this square that stops the comb.

To understand what isn't working, you first need to identify the two main parts that make up the comb. That is, the fluorescent tube and the sensor. For the fluorescent tube, there's no problem; it's the white part angled at 45°. For the sensor, it's the black bar perpendicular to the fluorescent tube. This sensor is where the problem lies.

As I recall, there are five glue points at the back of the sensor that hold it in place, and if you look closely, you'll see that the glue has overflowed on the other side of the sensor, obscuring the detection surface.

And there’s the problem!!! You need to remove the excess glue. I used a small screwdriver (be careful not to scratch) and I neatly cleaned the sensor.

As for the explanation, I think the glue has become opaque over time, making it impossible to detect the black square.

Now, one might wonder why there's a hole under the sensor right in the middle that allows the glue to overflow exactly in front of the black stop square.

Hello, could you please explain how you took apart the printer and removed that excess glue? I can't find a tutorial online to disassemble it.. thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, indeed it is the optical reader (invisible) located under the scanning lamp that stops the scanner at the end of its run to the right, with the two black dots in the center of the removable white strip placed on the fixed part below, this being positioned precisely with a hole at one end and a plastic peg fitting into it.
On my printer, it was this white strip, one centimeter wide, that had been smeared with yellow ink under the glass on the cartridge side (to the right) which was hiding these two black dots in the center; I discovered them while cleaning the strip with an alcohol cloth.
After that and careful reassembly, the scan stopped making a clicking sound (click click click...), and the printer returned to its normal standby position for printing or scanning.
I suspected that it was through the optical mechanism of the scanner and not mechanically that the scanning carriage was positioned, via this white strip, but I needed to remove the ink to see these two tiny black dots in the center of the strip that mark the end of the run.
You need to look for the fixing screws, some of which are hidden (8), and unclip the scanning elements in addition to the screws. You must disconnect the various wires (necessary) while taking care to note their orientation during disassembly. The control box is just clipped on.

    Good evening,

I took apart the scanner part to see how it’s put together... In your opinion, does the comb recognize its stops optically or by the motor's position?

Hello, same problem! So it’s no longer possible to print either...
I also disassembled it, but I can't see how the scanner recognizes the "stop". I would say probably optically, but I don't understand why it's not working anymore in that case.

I had the same issue and to try to fix it, I pressed the SCAN button for 30 seconds. And the problem is resolved! :-D

Hello Grandma, I've got a problem with the belt, I’m trying all the solutions but nothing works. When and how should I press the scan button? Before starting it or after? Thanks in advance.

Hello, so I see that we all have the same problem, the belt catches right at startup accompanied by a loud bang. So I took apart the whole scanner but nothing works, the problem remains unsolved. I have no choice but to buy a new one, to keep the commerce going.... We're dealing with planned obsolescence!!!

    Hello,

Apparently, someone managed to unlock it by pressing the scan button for 2 minutes...

    I tried to initialize:

    - by disconnecting the motor's power supply
    - by having removed the belt
    - by disconnecting the communication plugs on the comb and on the electronic board

    nothing works!

I've had the printer for a year (bought in April 2010, warranty expired) and I only use compatible cartridges, not Epson cartridges. Do you think the printer could be blocking its initialization for these reasons? Under what conditions did you use the printer?

No, I just had the problem, even with EPSON cartridges.

If it still exists, buy the sx218, you won't have any problems anymore. I bought it after the sx115, and it also works with refillable cartridges, no problem.

The same problem with a EPSON SX125 and a colleague with a EPSON SX115.

If you want to avoid printer problems, you shouldn't buy EPSON.

      Hello,

Same problem with an Epson SX105. Why is the topic marked as "resolved"?
Also, there is a white strip that is coming off at the comb, only on the stop side; does it have an effect?

    Good evening,
I opened this topic, I receive the answers by email and I accidentally clicked on the "resolved" link, so sorry...

For my SX115, I sent it back for repair. I gave it to my girlfriend after the repair and I bought a SX218 for myself.

For this kind of problem, I don't think there is any possible repair, although... thinking about it, for those who have disassembled it, try to run the printer without the belt to see how it behaves, right?

    +1

It seems that the printer cannot initialize if it does not receive a positive signal from the scanner. As for me, I have disconnected the power from the motor, the different connections, and the result is always the same: all the lights start flashing and the PC asks me to reset the printer.

If you have any new ideas...

    Good evening,

with a friend, we managed to start the printer without it going into error mode by pressing the power button while holding down all the buttons (stop, scan, black & white print, color print).
Could you please try it and let me know if it is possible to print this way?
    Thank you

I'm having the same problem with the stuck comb; I'm tinkering with it, let's keep each other updated...
