Finding a shortcut's target.

Hello,

I have the following problem.
I have a shortcut on my desktop. And I need to know in which folder the program is saved so that I can set it as the default program to open certain files. In the properties, I can only see the location of the shortcut itself, which is of no use to me. Likewise, when I search for the program with the start menu, I can only find the shortcut in the start menu located in roaming/internet.

It's a silly thing, but it drives me crazy, I really can't find it!!

A big thank you to anyone who can help me

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 3.6.13

    Here is the solution:

So you don't have the path in the properties, which is normal since it's a kind of special shortcut style that doesn't display the path. One of the solutions is the following: you start the program via this shortcut, and then through the task manager accessible via ctrl alt delete, right-click on the application in question, and then open the file location.

I have the same problem, to open Notepad++ I only have shortcuts, in its properties it says C:\Windows\CCM\VAppLauncher.exe /launch "Notepad++ 6.5.1R2"
But I have neither the context menu "open with notepad" nor the possibility to search for it in "open with" my application.
Your trick works great for other apps, unfortunately for this one, I don't have any window that opens to show me the location.
I'm not an admin on my machine, so I can't try to reinstall the program :(

Thank you, Mass, for the advice! I wanted to add a program to the context menu but couldn't find the original application... the search was returning a shortcut... but with the task manager technique, I found the original location of the application! Anyway, thanks :)

      Mass's solution is perfect.

Find the application's process through the task manager, then open its container from there. Then the user is free to recreate a shortcut to place on the desktop from the executable found.

      Very good solution. Well done!

Well no, the Start in field in properties is empty for me!
So I can't see the file location...

Have you read my question? As I already wrote, in the properties it's actually the location of the shortcut that is written (so on the desktop), which is really not helpful at all...

      Hello again

We're here to try to help you... and when we send a post, we don't consult each other beforehand to avoid being unpleasant by advising you three times on the same point.
Otherwise, try to check in program files (x86) or programData if there's a directory that might resemble what you're looking for.

Okay, sorry, let's say that the posts are too fast for me to keep up...
Even searching on the computer, I find shortcuts three times but not this ghost program, it's frustrating...
Impossible to find in program files and other program folders... I don't understand anything.

How did you install this program?
It is very likely that, if you took it from another computer, only the shortcut was copied.
      See you later!

By putting the CD in the drive...
I'm going to try to uninstall everything and reinstall...

    *sigh*

I'm saying it for the third time: the location of the file DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE PROPERTIES!!!

In the folder c:\User\USERNAME\Desktop it's exactly the same...

It's nice of you to try to help, but I feel like I'm talking to a wall here ;-)

It's asked so nicely that I think you'll manage just fine on your own...

Well, put yourself in my shoes... I said from the start that the information doesn't appear in the properties... I was told three times to go check it out. Three times I had to repeat that the section is empty... It's enough to make you want to bang your head against the walls...

Certainly. However, I would prefer no response at all than responses all equally useless because people haven't read the question asked.

Unfortunately, the procedure indicated by the link does not work: since I do not know where the program is, I can only click on the shortcuts, which gives me the shortcut access path...

Well, let me clarify one thing...
The location does not appear in the properties, the start in section is EMPTY.
I checked three times before posting here, I assure you...

Right-click on your anus after double-clicking on your right ball, and that's it.

Try deleting the shortcut on your desktop and then create a new one by searching in the Start menu; you will find another shortcut (it worked for me, but don’t do it if you don’t have a shortcut in the Start menu).

    Hello Lindberg

Try to check your desktop shortcuts at c:\User\USERNAME\Desktop
by selecting a shortcut, a label normally indicates the location of the exe. Otherwise, right-click and select properties

    Best regards

    Hello,

sorry, I don't have Windows Seven, but I think a right-click / shortcut properties should lead you to the original folder.
