Explorer.exe crash after right-click or C/C/

Hello everyone! so here it goes, randomly, I have a problem, and even more randomly: which is really starting to get on my nerves!!! by the way I apologize if the topic has already been dealt with, that said I don’t think so because I searched the site and found nothing! when I do a right-click, for example on my desktop to enter "properties", or even when I want to copy/paste any file from one partition of my disk to another the little Windows hourglass appears and nothing responds, so I have to end then restart explorer.exe. Just a clarification, for copy/paste this doesn’t necessarily happen by a right-click, it also happens when I use the keyboard shortcuts ctrl C / ctrl V...another precision in my Task Manager, explorer.exe, does not reach exuberant numbers it does not exceed 15/20 000 KB and the CPU does not lock at 100%, on the contrary everything remains normal. only explorer.exe stops responding! anyway it’s really really annoying in the long run, and I live abroad so I don’t have the chance to go to my reseller to yell at him, while waiting I’m looking for how to remedy this, via the various existing forums! I thank in advance anyone who has the possibility to get me out of this problem, really heavy in the long run (imagine using Windows without right-click!!! :D) thanks again, and Happy Holidays to all, as well as a Happy 2006!!! Hello,

I had this problem too. It’s generally a bug related to what gets added to the context menu. In my case it was the properties of the graphics card (not the standard menu but the menu added by the graphics drivers). These entries are the keys found in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. In my case there was a key igfxtruc. Since I know igfx is related to my card and I don’t care about having access to the specific menus through this route, I deleted it. Rejoice, everything works again.

Conclusion: you can try deleting these keys (except the new one) after backing them up. They are not vital to Windows’ operation; you’ll just remove some options from the desktop context menu...

Hoping this helps some people facing this annoying and thorny bug.

Thank you very much, I had this problem and with deleting the file "igfx..." everything came back in order :)

For my part, removing the igfx key was not enough; there was also Microsoft SkyDrive causing a problem. I uninstalled SkyDrive via the Control Panel, which removed the SkyDrive key in the registry and the explorer.exe crash bug disappeared.

Same problem with a computer equipped with an ATI graphics card (that happened to me). try removing the ACE key that is located in the same place as in Kay's link in the registry, namely HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers Just you will no longer have the link that leads to the "Catalyst Control Center" in the context menu when you right-click with the mouse, but at least Explorer won't crash anymore.

Hello. I have exactly the same problem with Explorer bugging when you right-click, and I was wondering if there really aren’t any other ways to fix this problem. To be honest, I’ve never formatted a hard drive, and from what I understand, that means completely erasing the files on the drive and reinstalling Windows. So how can I back up files when I have around a hundred Go... So aren’t there any other ways to deal with this problem?

I seem to have read elsewhere that you need to remove all the software and then reinstall them, but wouldn’t the problem risk repeating itself that way?

Hello,

I see that this post is quite old, but I also suffer from the same problem.

Has a definitive solution been found?

Good evening,
I have this problem too and I searched on Google and found this solution that works for the moment:
I deleted the key present00nView in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers which included: 00nView, New and NvCplDesktopContext.

that I found there:
https://forum.adsl-bc.org/viewtopic.php?t=27668&sid=5e73b802d2aa732d969b33e93dd71172

otherwise, I retrieved but did not install the latest version of the Nvidia driver from Acer:
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_1360/driver/

It's crazy that everyone has the same issue. I’ll try updating the driver and I’ll keep you posted. Because I have the same problem on a 1520 as well.

Strange thing, I just "killed" explorer.exe and then restarted it, and suddenly the right-click works everywhere... Weird, right?
Does it do the same for you?

Thanks for the help in any case!

Hi Arnaud, I have roughly the same problem as you, I haven’t tried with copy/paste, but it’s very annoying.

Have you found a solution to your problem?

thanks for replying if that’s the case!

hi

yes I found it!

I was told it was due to my disk partitioning!
so I formatted everything and deleted the partition, so I now have a C drive and everything runs smoothly!
hoping it will work for you!

Hi Arnaud.

My friend has exactly the same problem with her ACER Aspire 1520, and I have to admit it’s terribly annoying... You say that you were told it came from the partitioning... But what reason did they give you? A brief explanation would be welcome if possible, because non-partitioning the disk doesn’t seem to me to be a good solution.

Thank you.

hi

I went to see my dealer to tell him about my problem, and without seeming surprised by my question he asked me if the disk was partitioned, which it was. He then advised me to format the computer and to “partition it” and if the problem was still present to bring it back to him!
Obviously after having formatted everything, partitioned it, the problem disappeared, so I concluded that this isn’t the first time he has had feedback about this kind of problem with an Acer 1520!
that’s all I know! my pc works wonderfully now! no more nerve-wracking moments with every copy-paste!
I initially thought the same as you, I liked having my other partition in case of formatting or a virus, but after buying an external hard drive it is of no use to me anymore!

good luck!

First of all, the thing is that everything works for everyone because you formatted!! So a reset of the entire registry and all of Windows,
is not a feasible solution for me, yes I also have this recurring problem... so if you have any information!! I’m interested!

formatting = easy solution
arnaud you got fooled so to speak!!

thank you for your answers

Hi,

So here’s the thing: I also have this right-click problem on an Acer.
To solve this issue, formatting must absolutely not be done, it will come back.
In my case the problem comes from the graphics card (a GeForce FX). It’s enough to delete a NVIDIA key in the registry and everything works again. (this was done on 5 Acer laptops with this problem and everything has been fine since)
The issue... I can’t remember the location of the key and I’m desperately searching for the forum where I found the solution!!
If I have any news I’ll keep you posted!! And anyway for you Neopy I’ll tell you when we meet at the CESI :D

Here's the translation: I found the solution.
So for everyone who has the right-click problem and who have an NVIDIA card on their machine, you just need to delete the nview folder in the registry.

This folder is located here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\nview

No need to format anymore :D

Rather than modifying the registry, simply download from Acer’s support:
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_1360/driver/nvidia.zip

What to do after downloading nvidia.zip?

Hello, The aidechoute help solution works very well, the problem is that as soon as we stop or restart the PC, the nview folder reappears in the registry. It’s very annoying to have to delete it every time. Is there a way to prevent that? Thanks

Good evening everyone! :-))

I also own an Acer Aspire 1520 laptop.
And I have exactly the same right-click problem, which is very well explained by Arnaud above.

I followed the remjes' method (deleting the 00nview key).
And hooray! It works again! No more freezing even after restarting.

A big thank you to remjes! ;-))

Hi, well that's cool, I have exactly the same problem as you, I also have an Acer, but ..... I have an ATI, so no key in the registry, and no drivers, Nvidia! But anyway thanks for the info anyway, I will install the Acer drivers and not Microsoft's, and I was thinking it was because of Vista SP1!

I have a solution to my problem; the video drivers aren’t the issue:
If you have installed 7zip (free compression/decompression utility) and Split (free file splitter utility). Both apps use the same DLL (I forgot the name) and therefore clash causing Explorer to crash at every right-click and even with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V! You must choose between the two; for me 7zip serves me better than Split.
There you go, to anyone who understands!

Thank you for your contribution! :-) I will add your tip to the FAQ. For info, is Split the real name of the software? Because there is Easy Split 2002, Split File Shell Extension, Split File Pro, etc. A+ Nils

Hello everyone,

I have the same problem on a Dell Precision M4300 as well.
The issue is that I don’t have the nview file on my PC...

I’m downloading the graphics card drivers from Dell support but it’s taking ages... do you think it’s worth it?

Hello everyone. I had the same problem these days but I don’t have any Nvidia graphics cards nor compression utilities like EasyZip or codec packs like K-lite that are mentioned in other discussions about the same Explorer crash, but since the symptoms were exactly identical, I also looked into the registry and redundant or invalid keys using CCleaner but nothing. I also thought it might be the XP SP3 installed recently but not that either... So I uninstalled one by one the latest programs installed and the answer came with the Applian FLV Player module. I don’t know why since it runs fine and it doesn’t crash on my other PCs, but there you go—a solution that might help someone. Thanks everyone!

Good evening everyone!

I’m taking the liberty to bring up this topic again rather than starting a new one, because I have the same problem, with one caveat: my laptop is an Asus, a Notebook F3JC Series that’s about three years old. Running XP SP3, my graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GO 7300. And so, as soon as I right-click, Explorer crashes and I have to go through the Task Manager to stop it and relaunch.
I formatted C: the day before yesterday, thinking it would fix everything, but not at all.
I tried the proposed solutions: deleting the registry key and updating the Nvidia driver, but that didn’t solve it.

So if you have a little idea, I would be very grateful :)

Thank you!

Hello Oliv'

I formatted C: the day before yesterday, thinking it would reset everything properly, but not at all.
I’m very surprised that after a reformat, i.e., a full system reinstall, you still have the same problem! ?

Have you thought about checking your mouse or trackpad side! ?
Do you have the right drivers?

A+

Hello Nono,

thanks for your reply! I checked and apparently I have the right drivers... I must admit I don’t understand either why the problem persisted after the format...

See you later

I confirm that this bug comes from Format Factory; after uninstalling the program and without rebooting, the bug disappeared.

Thanks to Réactif who gave the solution below:

"I know this problem; it comes from a bug they still haven't fixed in Format Factory.

The software adds a registry key that is not correct for Windows 7 and consequently makes the Explorer crash.

Either remove the software, or delete the said key (it would be a shame to do without such a good free software).

Procedure:
- Start Menu, type in the Quick Search 'regedit' (do not press Enter).
- Right-click on 'regedit' and choose 'Run as administrator' and confirm.
- In the editor, search for the key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\FormatFactoryShell
- Delete the key, and you don't need to restart; the bug is fixed immediately.

Enjoy"

Hello,
I have the same right-click mouse issue on HP, but if I go into directory/background/shellex/contextmenuhandlers the options I can interact with aren’t the ones mentioned in the comments; I have 4 choices: ACE or Gadgets or New or Sharing....
If someone can relate and you can help me, that would be really cool...
Thanks in advance

Good evening Neopy. I don't have 00nView in the registry, so your trick doesn't work for me. Can you try to help me, please?

Hello,

Try reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 3 if you are on this OS.

This should work ;)

See you
